1st Dartmouth Scout Group

1st Dartmouth Scout Group 1st Dartmouth Scout Group has Beaver (age 6-8), Cub (age 8-10.5) and Scout (age 10.5-14) Sections. Beavers promise to do their best to be kind and helpful.

We have waiting lists for all sections, please follow the website link to register your children's interest in joining any section (not just Beavers). Beavers is for 6-8 year old children providing fun, educational activities both at our weekly meetings and occasional off site events including sleepovers and day visits to Cub and Scout camps. We are very lucky to have a great site in Dartmouth and

, weather permitting, we spend as much of the sessions outside as possible. During their two years at Beavers, children work towards earning badges in a wide variety of activities and challenges. The requirements for the badges are designed to encourage the Beavers to believe in themselves, respect and learn about the world around them, learn important life skills and try new things. When possible, every term we try to include at least 1 hike, another offsite activity or have an outside organisation visit the hut, and have a sleepover at the Scout Hut. Cubs is the next stage of Scouting for 8-10.5 year old children. It is slightly more formal than Beavers but the emphasis is still very much on having fun while doing more in depth activities. In place of sleepovers, the Cubs hold 2 days camps on the campground next to the hut. Scouts is the final section of Group level Scouting with the older sections operating at a district or wider level. While Scouts are guided by a Leadership team, they are encouraged to be fairly independent when engaging in activities with appropriate support provided as necessary. As well as standard camps, there is usually a chance to take part in a survival camp at least once a year and sleep out under the stars. All sections currently have waiting lists so registering an interest in joining is better done sooner rather than later. To do so, please fill in the form here: https://www.onlinescoutmanager.co.uk/waiting-list/1st-dartmouth-beaver-waiting-list/160409a6-8af6-4bb7-ae19-824ba9244248/apply This form is for all sections despite only mentioning Beavers, unfortunately we're not able to change the text on that page.

Hi, we are Charlie, Matthew & Tom. We all live in the Dartmouth area and have attended 1st Dartmouth Scout Group from Beavers through to Scouts.

Every 4 years, the Danish Scout Association organises a national camp with over 30,000 participants. Each time they extend an invitation out to Scouts around the world. In 2022 almost 5,000 international Scouts from 52 countries were invited. We have been selected as 3 of only 20 Scouts from Devon to attend the 2026 Jamboree.

Attending the Denmark Jamboree will be a once in a lifetime opportunity where we will not only be able to complete 50% of the international requirement for the King’s Scout Award (which is the highest award you can achieve as an Explorer Scout) but also develop many different skills and international connections that we will be able to use to help the local community through our various volunteer roles.
As well as the jamboree itself, we are required to attend 3 training camps plus information evenings, and must raise £1,400 each to cover the costs associated with the trip.

We will be organising a variety of events to raise funds for this and we would be very grateful for any donation you are able to make.

1st Dartmouth is the oldest Scout Group in Devon, and one of the oldest in the country, having operated continuously since 1910 meaning that we are 115 years old this year. Sadly, with things as they currently stand, I’m not convinced that the Group will see it’s 120th birthday and it may not even see the autumn term this year.
The group has been struggling for volunteers ever since I started, and the situation is unsustainable.

We need your help.

The guidance is that each section should have a minimum of 1 Team Leader and 3 Team Members. Add that to the Group Lead Volunteer and we should have a minimum of 13 people in the Group Leadership Team, we currently have 5 and we are losing at least one of those over the summer.

We will fight as long as we can to keep the group open, but we’re struggling. The summer term usually has every section on the water in some form at least once, but there are no water activities this term as we have no leaders able to go on the water.

For the most part, we don’t need people to get involved with the planning and paperwork, we just need boots on the ground to run the sessions and activities. If we can get enough people on the Leadership Teams, not everyone will need to come every week. The training involved isn’t taxing and, other than the first aid qualification, can now be done entirely online in a few hours. The only position we need to fill that would require some planning and paperwork is that of Scout Team Leader, but we’re more than happy to provide support to whoever takes that on for as long as they need.

If you are interested, but would like to see first hand what’s involved before committing, then we’d be happy to arrange for you to come along to some sessions. Just send us an email on [email protected]

If you can’t volunteer, then please spread the word that we’re looking for volunteers.

Please help us keep this wonderful group going, watching the children grow and mature as they move up through the sections is an absolute privilege.

Saturday 5th to Sunday 6th April 2025

The Scouts undertook an expedition to compare how the countryside differs between inland and coastal areas. We will hear their conclusions at our AGM.

The expedition took them from Blackawton to Kingsbridge on the Saturday (with a few unplanned detours) then on to East Soar on the Sunday. Thank you to 6th Kingsbridge Scout Group for letting us stay in their hut overnight.

The photo shows them as they came into East Soar.

Image Description:
A group of 7 children are walking down a gravel path. All but 1 are wearing red t-shirts or hoodies, the one on the left is wearing an orange t-shirt. They are all wearing dark coloured trousers and several are also wearing hats and high visibility tabards. 2 are carrying maps in map cases. The path is edged with low, green vegetation and a light-coloured wooden fence-like structure. The sky is a clear, light blue.

24th March 2025

The Beavers spent the evening in the Community Orchard looking for bugs and designing their dream Bug Hotel.

Image Description:
Full outdoor shot of a wooded area with two children.

The foreground shows an area covered with vibrant green plants, possibly wild garlic, surrounding a pile of logs and stack of pallets.

Two children, wearing identical red hoodies and grey-edged red neckers, are positioned in the centre of the image in front of the wood pile. They are inspecting the wood with the one on the right bending over to get a closer look. The child bending over is holding a clipboard and pen in their left hand. The child on the left is wearing a red jacket although it is of his shoulders and half way down his arms. The arm of a third child is just visible in the front left corner of the image.

The background is a mix of lush green trees, some with significant amounts of ivy clinging to their trunks. A distant view of a body of water (the river Dart) is visible through the trees, with a few small boats visible.

The overall impression is of a natural outdoor space being used for an activity involving nature exploration. The light suggests a day time setting.

The Cubs had a sleepover at the hut and did their best to create a container to allow their egg to safely descend from the top of the flagpole.

Thursday 20th March 2025

The Scouts were hosted by the Mayor, Deputy Mayor and Town Sergeant at the Guildhall. They learned about how the town council works as well as the history of the town and the mayoral regalia.

Image Description:
A large group of people, mostly children and young adults, are gathered in a room.

The room has a red wall and several framed portraits or paintings of people. A large, ornate, dark emblem/crest is centred on the wall, above a long raised podium. The room's surroundings suggest a historical official setting. Awards or items of recognition are visible on the front and of the podium.

The people are arranged in two rows with those in front seated at the podium's integrated table. All those sat down are Scouts wearing dark green shirts with grey-edged red neckers. The chair in the middle is larger and appears to be historic as it is made from dark carved wood. The back row is comprised of both Scouts and adults who are stood behind the chairs. The deputy Mayor is standing on the far left wearing a light blue long sleeved top with a dark blue gilet over the top. She has shoulder length hair. Next to her are 2 scouts in uniform, the one directly next to her is taller than her, the next is shorter. In the middle a teenage boy is leaning with his arms folded on the back of the ornate chair. he is wearing a light brown shirt with a dark coloured white-edged necker. Next to him, the Mayor is wearing a light grey jacket over a light blue shirt with a dark coloured tie, he is also wearing a metal emblem on a purple ribbon around his neck. Beyond the mayor, another Scout in uniform is stood leaning slightly forwards in front of a man wearing a light beige shirt and grey-edged red necker. On the far right, the Town sergeant is wearing his official black uniform with white gloves and a black hat. He is holding the town standard in front of him.

Monday 3rd March 2025

The Beavers had fun creating mini twig rafts.

Image Description:
A young girl, wearing a turquoise Beaver Scout uniform and grey-edged red necker, is showing off a small raft she has created from twigs, leaves and string. Her expression is focused and engaged.

Other children in similar uniforms are also visible in the background, suggesting a group activity is taking place. A wood effect folding table, littered with natural materials like twigs and leaves, is present in the foreground. The room's interior is simple, with neutral-coloured walls and floors.
