Deaf Choices UK

Deaf Choices UK Cued Speech is a system of hand cues that enables deaf babies and children to SEE spoken English. Research evidence available from our office.

Deaf children face several problems, primarily stemming from the fact that it is extremely hard for them to understand spoken language. Communication can be very difficult for the 90% of deaf children born to hearing parents; research reports state that it is estimated that 81% of parents with a deaf child never learn to communicate with their child. This means that these deaf children are effecti

vely excluded from family life. In addition, many never gain enough understanding of English to become fully literate, greatly reducing their ability to achieve at school and beyond. A deaf person is 2½ times more likely to be unemployed than a hearing person and approximately a third of deaf adults rely on government benefits. Current strategies to communicate with deaf babies are usually that either the whole family should learn a new language, British Sign Language (BSL), which takes years and is a completely different language from English - or that families rely on hearing aids or cochlear implants to solve the problem. However there is clear research evidence which shows that neither approach is working effectively for the majority of deaf children. A Speech & Language Therapist with 8 years experience of working with deaf children has told us: 'Very few of our secondary age students manage to progress beyond a reading age of 8 years and the majority have a reading age of 7 years. ... Perhaps even more worrying than this is the psychological effect that impoverished communication at home has on many of our students. ... Many of our students suffer high levels of frustration with low self-esteem and low levels of emotional literacy, despite coming from loving, caring families.'

Here is another inspiring story from a new book called "Our Chosen Path” - personal stories and professional articles addressing the significance of cueing in the everyday lives of individuals, families, and professionals in deaf education.

How Cueing has shaped my life by Michael Bellamy:

"I was diagnosed as profoundly deaf as a child. I was fitted with hearing aids, but the doctor said it was likely I would have to learn sign language and never be able to speak.

My parents took classes in sign language, but they felt that they could not say all the things they wanted to, so they decided to try something different.

I was enrolled in an oral education program. I had big hearing aids, but I still could not hear enough to say more than vowel sounds. It was extremely frustrating and someone recommended that we try Cued Speech.

My mom says that I loved the Cued Speech preschool from day one! I started cueing when I was almost 4, and I repeated Kindergarten so that I could catch up on my language.

I then had a cochlear implant in my right ear, and I was able to hear my parents' actual voices! Having access to cued language allowed me to quickly pick up various types of communication, including other sounds to which I was not accustomed.

After completing my associate science degree, I completed my bachelor’s degree in sports management. When I graduated, I started work.

It was a huge challenge for me because I had to deal with numerous customers daily without a cued speech transliterator, but I overcame that obstacle through listening and speechreading, and by providing others with awareness about cued speech."

We plan on sharing inspiring details from a new book called "Our Chosen Path”, which collates personal stories and professional articles addressing the significance of cueing in the everyday lives of individuals, families, and professionals in deaf education.

From Cueing to Spoken English by Jhenna Becker:

"My parents found out about my deafness when I was 13 months old. My parents initially learned and taught me American Sign Language as an early bridge to communication.

After I received my first cochlear implant, my parents wanted to expose me to English and decided on Cued American English

Cueing was very beneficial to me and my parents noticed the impact it had on my language within a short period of time. I can't express how much Cued Speech and Sign Language have assisted me in learning language and communication - my speech and listening skills are phenomenal!

Language, speech and auditory development are vital during the first few years of life because these are the primary language learning years.

Due to my parents learning Cued Speech right away, I was able to learn English without much of a language delay and I became a successful student. I am so thankful for the benefits Cued Speech has brought to my life."
