Here is another inspiring story from a new book called "Our Chosen Path” - personal stories and professional articles addressing the significance of cueing in the everyday lives of individuals, families, and professionals in deaf education.
How Cueing has shaped my life by Michael Bellamy:
"I was diagnosed as profoundly deaf as a child. I was fitted with hearing aids, but the doctor said it was likely I would have to learn sign language and never be able to speak.
My parents took classes in sign language, but they felt that they could not say all the things they wanted to, so they decided to try something different.
I was enrolled in an oral education program. I had big hearing aids, but I still could not hear enough to say more than vowel sounds. It was extremely frustrating and someone recommended that we try Cued Speech.
My mom says that I loved the Cued Speech preschool from day one! I started cueing when I was almost 4, and I repeated Kindergarten so that I could catch up on my language.
I then had a cochlear implant in my right ear, and I was able to hear my parents' actual voices! Having access to cued language allowed me to quickly pick up various types of communication, including other sounds to which I was not accustomed.
After completing my associate science degree, I completed my bachelor’s degree in sports management. When I graduated, I started work.
It was a huge challenge for me because I had to deal with numerous customers daily without a cued speech transliterator, but I overcame that obstacle through listening and speechreading, and by providing others with awareness about cued speech."
