Walkwyse is an outdoor activity webapp providing GPS guided rambles & mazes for enjoyment and in aid of Alzheimer's Research UK, running on any mobile device (as well as on a PC or Mac). The webapp was developed during Covid lockdowns by Lin & Peter Horne and followed Lin's devastating diagnosis of Alzheimer's in 2019. One of the things Lin enjoys most is walking, as does Peter, so it made sense t

Every Step for a Cure: Support My Ultra Marathon Challenge for Alzheimer’s Research UK

On Saturday I completed a 32K circular walk from Mothecombe to Noss Mayo, following a stunning stretch of the South West Coast Path before returning along part of the South Hams Way through some of the most beautiful countryside in the region. It was a challenging but inspiring day, and every step was driven by one goal: helping fund vital dementia research.

This walk was part of my preparation for day 2 of the Endure for a Cure Ultra Marathon event in August 2026. I’m taking on this challenge to raise money for Alzheimer's Research UK, a charity working to find a cure for dementia through life-changing research. So far, the teams’s raised an amazing £6,853 — but I’d love to go even further. If you’re able to support, please consider donating or sharing this fundraiser. Every contribution, big or small, helps bring us one step closer to a cure.

Visit to Exeter University Medical Centre Today

Lin, Antoinette (Lin's part time carer), and I visited Exeter University Medical Centre for a behind-the-scenes look at its dementia research. It felt especially important to take Lin with us, in the hope that seeing the reality of Alzheimer’s up close would help the researchers understand more deeply the devastating impact it has on both of our lives.

It was fascinating to see first-hand what the dementia researchers do in a typical day, and we were given a wonderful glimpse into the dedication and care behind their work. I am not entirely sure our own attempts to help were especially useful, but it certainly made for a memorable and enjoyable experience.

We also had the privilege of hearing directly from Professor Wendy Noble about the important work being carried out there, particularly the research into tau protein, which plays such a fundamental role in many forms of dementia. Listening to her speak made it impossible not to feel hopeful about the difference this work could make in the future.

This research is funded by Alzheimer's Research UK, please support us and make a donation https://www.justgiving.com/page/endure-for-a-cure-peter-horne

In 2026, we’ve set ourselves a big, hopeful goal: £50,000. Every single pound brings us closer to a future where Alzheimer’s no longer steals memories, independence, or the moments that make life meaningful.

As a not‑for‑profit organisation, we’re also proud to stand beside Dartmouth Caring and its memory café, a lifeline for local families navigating dementia with courage and love.

If you’re able to give, please do. Your donation today helps protect the connections, stories, and lives of the 1 million people affected by Alzheimer’s across the UK.

Your support can change lives. Donate to Alzheimer's Research UK via our JustGiving page. ⬇️

The route for “Endure for a Cure” is officially here, and seeing it mapped out makes this challenge feel more real than ever. 💚

For us, the Walkwyse 109‑mile journey is so much more than a four‑day endurance event. It’s a tribute to love, to resilience, and to the hope that fuels everyone affected by Alzheimer’s.

Over four days, a small team will push through 109 miles of the South West’s landscapes.

Take a look at the route our Walkwyse team will be taking, and see how you could walk beside us, in person or in spirit, as we take on this challenge for Alzheimer's Research UK

Since Lin’s Alzheimer’s diagnosis in 2019, walking has become our way of holding onto joy, routine, and time together. Every step has helped lift her spirits and remind us of the strength we still share.

During COVID, we turned our walking adventures into an app so others could explore the same routes Lin and I have loved.

Endure for a Cure is our next chapter, a 109‑mile, 4‑day ultramarathon challenge across the South West. A small, determined team will take on the full route to help raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK, in honour of Lin and everyone affected by this disease.

If our story moves you, or if you’d like to walk beside us in spirit, we’d love your support.

Stage 9 of our virtual Ramble Across Europe covered 567km from Montpellier, France to Bern, Switzerland, completed between January 1st and May 9th. The weather was particularly challenging in January & February but thankfully in the latter 3 or 4 weeks it has been much kinder. We have now just started the next stage which is from Bern to Munich and is a distance 434km.

Since January 2022, I've walked a total of 6,191 km on this long-distance ultra challenge.

Training for Endure-for-a-Cure ultra marathon in August has given me some unforgettable moments — like the incredible 6am sunrise in the photos below. Over the last four weeks I’ve clocked up 160km, including a challenging 40km stretch along the Dartmouth–Salcombe coast loop with Bob last Saturday. Hard work, especially with the sun getting a lot warmer, but truly rewarding.

Lin & I also managed a 4km walk/wheelchair together on the Sunday to our local beach and back, and had our first ice-cream tub of the season. Lin really enjoyed her ice-cream, despite the cold wind!

My first walk of over 40km on Saturday as part of my training for the Walkwyse Endure for a Cure 109mile Ultra marathon, for more info visit https://walkwyse.com/endure-for-a-cure-109-mile-ultra-marathon I walked from home to Dartmouth and then 20km along the South West coast path to Start Point lighthouse before returning to home, a total of 41.4km in 8.6 hours and an altitude gain of 1,139 meters. This really was a hard walk with the number of climbs up and down steep hills/cliffsides.

This distance has also propelled me along stage 9, Montpellier to Bern, of our virtual Ramble Across Europe. and am now 197km north of Montpellier and about 50k south of Grenoble in France. For more information visit https://walkwyse.com/ramble-across-europe/

All my walking is in aid of raising funds for Alzheimer's Research UK and ridding us of the terrible disease that is Alzheimer's. To make a donation please go to https://www.justgiving.com/page/peter-j-horne
