The Immediate Past Master, is the Brother who as his title of office suggests was the Worshipful Master prior to the incumbent Master. His role is pivotal to a successful meeting of the Lodge, with his foremost responsibility being to function as a guide and support to the Worshipful Master during ceremonies at Regular Lodge Meetings and at the Lodge of Instruction where the Brethren rehearse for upcoming Regular Meetings. As in any institution or organisation where words, lines and passages are memorised and rehearsed by those taking a large and active speaking role, there is always someone on hand who can provide a necessary prompt or piece of discreet advice to keep things on track and within Freemasonry, this role is carried out by the Immediate Past Master. The Jewel of a Past Master is the Square with the addition of the 47th Proposition of Euclid or the Pythagorean theorem, which in itself is a symbol of mathematical perfection and justly applied by Past Masters to denote the attainment of the highest possible levels of morality and moral conduct in life through their constant study of the liberal arts and sciences. From their initiation, passing and raising and putting that study into active practice via their advancement to and through the Masters Chair, it now serves as a visual reminder that a Past Masters conduct in life should be as unwavering as the laws of Geometry.

The Junior Warden is the third of the Lodges three principal officers and like the other two, is specifically situated within the Lodge, particularly in the South where he symbolically represents the Sun at its meridian (noon) and therefore the working day. Likewise, he is also a figurative representation of Hiram Abiff, the chief artist and architect of King Solomon who was responsible for the designing, planning and construction of the Temple at Jerusalem. The Junior Warden holds a gavel, an emblem of power which enables him to keep order in the South of the Lodge. From this position, he is also able to instruct the Brethren on receiving the command from the Worshipful Master, to call them from labour to refreshment and vice versa. The Jewel on his collar of office is the Plumb Rule, an emblem of uprightness, teaching man to walk upright and justly with his fellow man and before his God, turning not towards malice but aligned with virtue and morality. Metaphorically speaking, the Plumb Rule also reminds us of the alignment and connection between physical deeds and spiritual belief. The column on the right of the Junior Warden is of the Corinthian order of architecture and is symbolic within Freemasonry of beauty, especially the beauty of the Temple and the skill with which Hiram Abiff adorned the structure, which were said to have surpassed the imagination in beauty and splendour.

The Senior Warden is the penultimate office before progressing onto the Mastership of the Lodge and is the second of the three principal officers. Holding a gavel, an emblem of power that allows for him to maintain order in the West, he is situated in the West and is a figurative representative of the King Hiram of Tyre, the ally and neighbour of King Solomon, whom he supported with men and materials during the construction of the Temple at Jerusalem. One of the duties of the Senior Warden is to close the Lodge on receiving that command from the Worshipful Master. As Freemasonry is highly symbolic and laden with metaphoric allegories and symbols, he also represents the setting sun, to denote the close of the day and the completion of the work within the Lodge. His pedestal has a Tripod or “Lewis” from which a smooth Ashlar is suspended or supported. This denotes his progression and journey within Freemasonry, from a “rough” or “unrefined” man of limited learning and experience, to one who has obtained knowledge through hard work, learning and skill to become “smoothed” or “honed” in his achievements over time. The symbolism of the Tripod/Lewis also reflects the support he gives to the Master and Brethren. On installation nights, he is handed a column, atop of which is a map of the celestial, a reflection of his role in overseeing the closure of the Lodge and also a representation of one of the pillars that stood at the entrance of the Temple at Jerusalem. The Jewel of the the Senior Warden, which is attached to his collar of office, is a Level, which within Freemasonry is an emblematical representation of Equality and is meant to remind all Freemasons, that all men are born equal and have equal worth throughout the chequered existence of human life. To the right of his pedestal is a column of the doric order of architecture. This order of architecture within freemasonry denotes strength and particularly the strength of King Hiram of Tyre in Supporting King Solomon in his construction of the Temple.

The Worshipful Master is the highest ranking officer within any Masonic Lodge, who chiefly presides over all rites and ceremonies, the first of the three principal officers. He figuratively represents King Solomon and is situated within the East. Like the two Wardens, he also holds a Gavel, an emblem of power, with which he can call order within the Lodge, particularly in the East. The Jewel on his Collar is a Square, and is an emblematical guide to all his actions throughout a virtuous and pious life. It is also worth noting, that placed on the pedestal is the Volume of the Sacred Law, commonly a Bible, but always changeable depending upon an individuals personal faith. This is surmounted by a Square and Compass, the emblems of Freemasonry. The candlestick on the Master right is of the ionic order of architecture and represents wisdom, particularly the wisdom of King Solomon in building and dedicating the Temple at Jerusalem to Gods service. Each year a new Master is elected by the Members and Installed by his predecessor, at which point he will invest the new Worshipful Master with the Masters Collar and Jewel and deliver up the Warrant of the Lodge which authorises the existence of the Lodge. As the supreme authority within any Lodge, the Master typically abstains from votes and resolution put forward by the Members, but holds the casting vote in case of deadlock. This maintains a system of fairness so far as is possible with any given situation that arises. He is also responsible for overseeing the executive functioning of the Lodge at General Purpose Committee meetings by presiding as Chairman and ensuring that the business of the day is conducted efficiently.
