The Immediate Past Master, is the Brother who as his title of office suggests was the Worshipful Master prior to the incumbent Master. His role is pivotal to a successful meeting of the Lodge, with his foremost responsibility being to function as a guide and support to the Worshipful Master during ceremonies at Regular Lodge Meetings and at the Lodge of Instruction where the Brethren rehearse for upcoming Regular Meetings. As in any institution or organisation where words, lines and passages are memorised and rehearsed by those taking a large and active speaking role, there is always someone on hand who can provide a necessary prompt or piece of discreet advice to keep things on track and within Freemasonry, this role is carried out by the Immediate Past Master. The Jewel of a Past Master is the Square with the addition of the 47th Proposition of Euclid or the Pythagorean theorem, which in itself is a symbol of mathematical perfection and justly applied by Past Masters to denote the attainment of the highest possible levels of morality and moral conduct in life through their constant study of the liberal arts and sciences. From their initiation, passing and raising and putting that study into active practice via their advancement to and through the Masters Chair, it now serves as a visual reminder that a Past Masters conduct in life should be as unwavering as the laws of Geometry.
