A message from Katie Gallagher, Chair of the Neonatal Nurses Association:

Following the publication of the members of the National Maternity and Neonatal Taskforce expert reference groups, I’m honoured to share that I have been appointed to represent the Neonatal Nurses Association (NNA) on the Workforce, Clinical and Academic Group. Alongside leading clinicians and researchers, we will help shape the final recommendations of this national review to enhance care for babies and their families.

I was surprised to find, however, that I am the only neonatal nurse in the group despite neonatal nurses being the largest professional group delivering neonatal care. I have again raised the urgent need for stronger neonatal nursing representation throughout the review process, to ensure any recommendations are realistic, deliverable, and grounded in frontline expertise.

Neonatal nurses are central to safe, effective, and compassionate neonatal care. Our voices, experience, and leadership must be heard. I will continue to champion our profession and push for greater representation.
Over the coming months, I’ll be sharing updates from the group and seeking feedback from our members. Your insight matters, and I encourage you to share your experiences and views so that neonatal nursing has a strong and united voice in shaping the future of care. Neonatal nurses are highly skilled, progressive, and collaborative professionals.
Together, we have the opportunity to influence a review that can create meaningful and lasting change for babies, families, and staff. I look forward to working with you, our members, to create this change.

As always, if you would like to discuss anything with us, please do get in touch.

✨About the webinar✨

How can Family Integrated Care remain at the heart of neonatal transport? Join the NNA Transport and NNA FICare Special Interest Group chairs, leads and members for this collaborative webinar that will explore how FICare can be meaningfully embedded across the full range of neonatal transfers.
The session will consider the challenges faced by transport teams, the importance of communication between neonatal units, transport services and families and how small moments of partnership can make a lasting difference. Through practical examples, parental perspectives and audience discussion, attendees will gain insight into how compassionate, family integrated care can be delivered during every transfer, while always maintaining safety as the priority.

This webinar is £12.50 for non-members or free for members. Not yet a member of the NNA? Join us today: https://bit.ly/3XLO7S7

The NNA Neonatal Transport SIG is developing a new national toolkit to support the implementation of Kangaroo Cuddle Position in neonatal transport.

This work has been supported by the Kate Farrer Foundation and is being led by an incredible group of neonatal nurses from across the UK, informed by services already offering this approach with powerful benefits for babies and families.

It also builds on the important foundations laid through our 2021 Kate Farrer Foundation Scholarship, which explored how Kangaroo Cuddle Position can be safely and effectively delivered during neonatal transport.

This is another step towards ensuring every baby and family can experience the closeness, comfort and connection they deserve wherever they are.
