GONE 14 Skylarks GONE 4 Gray partridge GONE 106 individual red list birds . Houses come before nature every time and it makes my blood boil. This is a 27 acre farm site now an allocated housing site on the local plan. It will be difficult to stop them building the 1500 houses planned over two sites . The bird numbers are for half of the planned area LL/00632/OUTE find it on Darlington borough councils planning portal . This info is in appendix G - of the Ecology Appraisal neatly tucked out of the way

How clean is the Tees? I’ve watched the excellent Paul Whitehouse programmes on the health of our waterways due to sewage, chemical and plastic pollution and wonder how our River Tees is fairing. Do you know? I’m interested to hear.

The whole sad episode of the crustacean deaths and the dredging of toxic waste , creating a dead zone right along our coastline is being discussed.

In the autumn of 2021, a large number of dying and distressed crabs were washed ashore along the coastlines of County Durham and Teesside. Initially dismissed as a toxic algal bloom, a re-investigation suggested more complex causes. At the time of writing, it remains unclear whether the deaths were....

❌ Digger activity has destroyed significant habitat at the designated wildlife site at Blackwell Historic Park. Join the quick photo shoot protest ! Meet at the stone gates 1pm Sat 11th Blackwell lane.

This is area was designated as a wildlife site at the local plan hearings because of its proximity to the Great Crested Newts and bat populations.

The destructive digger activity at the back of the Blackwell hotel will have disrupted hibernating and protected species just ahead of the bird nesting season cut off on the 1st March

Locals reported the issue to DBC planning and estates dept who reportedly visited the site . We wait for a formal response and a protected future for this designated wildlife site

Interesting that the RSPB is calling for “IMMEDIATE INVESTIGATION' into the mass die off of thousands of crabs and a “ HALTING “of the planned dredging of the Tees” whilst Ben Houchen Tees Valley Mayor in a recent statement is still holding onto the the old algae bloom theory!

The statement read “RSPB strongly recommends that Defra reopens their investigation into these die-offs with immediate effect and further, adopts a responsible approach by halting dredging of the Tees until a full scientific analysis can rule it out as a contributory factor,” the RSPB statement added.

“Katie-Jo Luxton, the RSPB’s director of conservation said “Our seabird populations have halved since the 1980s. Now, a highly mutable and deadly new form of avian influenza, which originated in poultry, is killing our wild seabirds in large numbers.”

Campaigning for a Greener Future

I believe in the ethics and principles of Permaculture - Earth Care, People Care and Fair Shares - I am inspired by the complexities of nature, it’s patterns and produce, the seasonal surprises, its magnificent power and beauty. Equally, I am devastated and saddened by the reality, the sickly images and deathly statistics of our fragile planet; the plastic mountains we are making together, trashy products designed to break, over consumption. We have fought too long with our oil powered greedy supremacy, slashing, chopping, burning, polluting the sea, sky and soil-degrading everywhere, causing chaos, distress and climate breakdown.

As Coordinator for Darlington Friends of the Earth for the last 12 years I have worked on many campaigns across a wide range of issues, caring and empathising with people and the natural world, encouraging communities and people to get involved.

As a mother of three, I want my children to know that I tried to make a difference, that I tried to protect their earth, for them and for all our children.
