Darlington Rotary Club enjoyed a superb "Fifth Friday" evening on Thursday at Bannatyne Hotel Darlington when the guest speaker was our own Past President Michelle Thompson.

Given the title "Fundraising the Hard Way" she described her heartbreaking experience of losing her 18 year old sister to bone cancer then getting the disease herself. Having enjoyed support from Macmillan Cancer Support she set herself to achieve challenging and spectacular targets - trekking in Peru, cycling in Vietnam, at least ten times on the Great North Run, the TCS London Marathon, climbing Kilimanjaro and many more. She says she has raised around £250k for Macmillan....we think it's more.

Her daughter Emily nominated Michelle for The Sun Wondermum awards in 2009 which saw her as one of the five winners.

Her emotional and sensitive story was told with humour and personality as you would expect from Michelle - an evening that all present will remember for a long time.

President Jane Bradshaw had the hard task of giving a vote of thanks which she did with aplomb....here are some pics from the evening

The Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College team were at Croft Circuit yesterday with their battery powered Greenpower Education Trust car. Performing in the presence of teacher Nancy Wall, Rotary President Jane Bradshaw, Rotarians Robin Raine, Iain Anderson and Ged Wiper they finished 4th from 11 starters - new build starts for 26/27 and we look forward to seeing their progress with this exercise in sustainable transport....and motor racing!

Good way to start a Friday with the Darlington Rotary Club breakfast meeting - busy and enjoyable at The Dolphin Centre. Guests were our speaker Mark Dobinson from Tees Valley Sport - introducing a new initiative where Rotary Darlington will work with them to support young sports stars of the future.

With Mark was his father Brian Dobinson who, alongside Paul Foreman from Darlington Borough Council, was with us in his capacity as Chair of Darlington Sports Winners Scheme. After 50 successful years it has been decided to end these awards and we are very grateful for the donation of £950 from their residual funds that we will use for our good causes. Thank you.

Also in the pics are President Jane Bradshaw and host for the day Rtn. Roly Lang

Eleven enthusiastic members of Darlington Rotary Club marshalled around 107 dogs and their owners around the St Teresa's Hospice ‘Paws Aboard’ dog walk last Sunday morning, despite three of them “not being very fond of dogs”. The 5km walk, along an attractive riverside path from Hopetown Darlington, raised over £1500 for much needed hospice funds.

Darlington Rotary Club enjoyed another sociable and voluble breakfast. Good food and good company first thing in the morning is not a bad way to start the day.

Our own Rotarian Peter Phillips gave a superb presentation about developments at VINGUJINI MIXED HIGH SCHOOL, Msambweni, Kenya. Covering three areas:
The School: desks, toilet block, sports and quality education;
Books: working with JUST BE A CHILD he showed how books go from donation to destination via car, van, ship and container;
Foster Home: the new residential block that will house 12 children and a community swimming pool.

Inspirational stuff reflected in these pics including one with President Jane Bradshaw and host for the day Brian Park

Darlington Rotary Club is delighted to help with a new defibrillator for the Old School Boxing Darlington. Funded 50:50 with Darlington Lions Charity Bookshop and purchased through the Rotary North East 'One Life Initiative' which provides discounted defibrillators for the community. Here Rotarian Gary Blenkinsopp with Michael Hall from the Old School. It's one of those things that we are glad to give and hope is never used!

President Jane Bradshaw welcomed Darlington Rotary Club to our breakfast at The Dolphin Centre. She also welcomed to membership Pauline Mowden Culley and Sue Richmond - two excellent recruits with fine track records of working in our community.

Our speaker was Sam Binns aka The Ironing Man. What an inspiring story about a young entrepreneur making good in the business world by developing his laundry and ironing business. A captivating talk was especially appreciated as it was Sam's first venture into public speaking. Well done Sam! Pictured here with host for the day Peter Barron Media
