Open Studios starting next Saturday!
Come and explore the creative spaces of the artists renting studios up at Botton Village next weekend. Studios open 10 AM -3 PM.
Sarah Tew- An award-winning painter based in the North York Moors whose work is deeply inspired by landscape, weather, and the natural world. Working mainly in watercolour, both en plein air and in the studio, she captures fleeting moments through expressive brushwork and experimental marks, focusing on atmosphere and emotion rather than precise detail. Her weather-worn sketchbooks, carried on walks alongside a pocket watercolour set, are treasured records of the raw energy and changing moods that shape her paintings.
Ben Tew ( Hex Components ) - A designer, engineer, and mountain biking enthusiast based in the North York Moors. Working from his workshop in the UK, he creates small batches of bike parts that combine digital design with hands-on craftsmanship. Using casting, machining, and 3D printing techniques, each piece is carefully finished by hand with a focus on quality and durability. Ben keeps production intentionally small, working with long-lasting materials to make components that feel purposeful, honest, and built to endure.
Effie Burns- Effie creates unique botanical sculptures inspired by walks along cliff paths, through woodlands, and beside the sea. Drawn to the textures, patterns, and small treasures found in nature, they work seasonally to produce intimate collections throughout the year. Her work has been exhibited both in the UK and internationally, from cast glass mushrooms at the Armitt Museum to botanical treasures displayed in a medieval Bavarian castle. Small editions and one-off pieces are released directly from the studio for collectors who understand the joy of never returning from a walk with empty pockets.
Jane Robinson- A fine artist based in Castleton, with a background in theatre design and puppetry, Jane previously taught art and craft at Botton School for 25 years. Her work is inspired by local folklore, storytelling, and the surrounding landscape, explored through expressive painting and mixed media. Rooted in a lifelong involvement with creativity and visual expression, Jane's practice reflects a deep connection to place, imagination, and traditional craft.
Jan Hinchliffe McCutcheon - Jan creates distinctive jewellery collections ranging from handmade editions to one-off statement pieces, viewing jewellery as both wearable art and portable objects. Inspired by linear forms found in the environment, her work combines materials such as carved ebony, textile cord, kiln-formed glass, and textured silver to explore weight, texture, colour, and balance. Through simple construction methods and thoughtful composition, each piece is designed to evoke a tactile and intuitive connection for the wearer.
Lizzie Hayley- Lizzie explores mixed media, mark making, and collage through an intuitive and playful creative process. Working without rigid plans, she embraces experimentation, layered textures, and spontaneous gestures to create work that feels both expressive and immersive. Inspired by the natural world and the imagination alike, her pieces often drift between observation and fantasy, resulting in richly textured artworks full of movement, curiosity, and atmosphere.
Chris Suttie- As a ceramic practitioner, Chris Suttie works with fire clays sourced from specific sites and wood-fires them in traditional kilns. His forms and methods of display are site-specific, shaped by the raw materials available and the character of each location. This approach carries through into the finished objects, while the way they are presented activates the surrounding space and invites visitors to engage with its history, atmosphere, and setting.
Julie E Mead- Julie is a former teacher and lecturer in art and design is now following her own independent practice. Her most recent body of work, The Little Scout, uses anthropomorphism within the natural world. Using the qualities of certain animals to educate as subject matter and depicting them in an illustrative, watercolour style reminiscent of traditional illustrators within the reading schemes of Florence and Margaret Hoopes and The Ladybird key word series. Then overlaying the images using photoshop onto simple Pantone backgrounds to decontextualise them in place and time.
Our shop, cafe, and thrift pop-up will be open too!
