Yesterday, the UK Government announced plans to introduce a social media ban for under-16s, with the aim of improving online safety and protecting children's wellbeing.
The announcement comes amid growing concerns about the impact of social media on young people. NHS England reports that 1 in 5 children and young people aged 8-16 have a probable mental disorder, while many children tell the Children's Commissioner that online pressures, harmful content and unrealistic comparisons can affect their mental health.
As a mental health charity, ERCA recognises that social media can provide connection, community and support, but it can also present challenges for children's wellbeing. Whatever your view on the proposed changes, the discussion highlights the importance of helping young people develop healthy online habits and ensuring they have access to trusted support both online and offline.
