Lots achieved in the community garden today thanks to our trusty team of volunteers!

We continued to build up the beds with timber and there was plenty of watering, composting and planting.

The new bed was filled with compost, and volunteer Ena prepared several more house leek pots.

Big thanks to everyone who played a part today 💚

Today we only managed to take one photo, but there was plenty happening in the garden!

We now have a lovely new Explorer Station set up for the children, where they can help themselves to activities and return items when they're finished. It's already looking like a great addition to the space.

We filled up water bottles, watered the plants, did some feeding, and harvested even more vegetables. There is now lots available at the front gate, so please help yourself!

We also spent some time tidying up around the garden, started on some new plant pots and put together new planters.

Then the nursery children from Newtongrange Primary ELC came along and enjoyed a little bug hunt and plenty of play around the garden.

Want to know what we got up to at Forest School today?

We spent the morning noticing the weekly changes around the garden and playing with natural materials. We also did litter picking and bug hunting.

One family made heavenly-smelling sweet pea posies for everyone and we spent the rest of the morning drinking freshly foraged and brewed mint teas!

If you’re wondering what we got up to in the Community Garden today, the answer is a lot!

- Met with visitors from a local climate action network, including internship students, to discuss upcoming plans and projects.

- Painted a display board/palette for hanging magnifying glasses, binoculars, and other exploration equipment for children.

- Continued work on children's nature exploration sheets.

- Built additional protective frames for cabbages and Brussels sprouts.

- Carried out weeding in various areas of the garden.

- Watered plants and garden beds.

- Assisted with painting tasks around the garden.

- Thinned and weeded the wheat beds.

- Planned the remaining planting layout and identified what still needs to be planted out.

- Worked on planting and greenhouse organisation.

- Completed strimming in selected areas.

- Finished one of the beds around the circle area.

- Nursery children visited the garden and enjoyed making willow flower crowns, hearts, and wands.

- Continued preparations and maintenance work ahead of the summer holidays.

It was a team-powered morning in the community garden yesterday as our Forest School pupils worked together to create a wonderfully colourful stick, each adding their own bright touch.

We had much laughter playing the magic bag game, trying to guess the hidden nature treasure without using our eyesight and relying instead on touch, smell and imagination!

We also made a cleavers tonic and we rounded it off with glorious mud-kitchen play.

Thank you to everyone, young and old, who continues to help this garden grow! 🪴
