Shire Housing Association Limited

Shire Housing Association Limited Great Homes, Great People, Vibrant Communities Formed in 1997, Shire Housing was set up to take former "public" housing into local ownership and control.

Motivated by community members we are still directed by a voluntary board of management - a number of whom have been active since inception. We are a not for profit organisation with charitable status and exist to provide high quality housing and associated services in an efficient and friendly way. Initially we took ownership of some 1100 houses. Since that time we have invested around £9m in our

housing stock. With the support of the Scottish Government and East Ayrshire Council we have been able to supplement the stock base with a range of new and refurbished properties. We also work closely with East Ayrshire Council in the management and delivery of the Care and Repair service across East Ayrshire. Locally based and controlled, we are sensitive to the needs of the communities we serve and we work hard to deliver quality and value. Our quality standards have been recognised by the achievement of Investors in People and Customer Service Excellence status. Value is more subjective. We work continuously to demonstrate and test our approach - through comparing our performance with other registered social landlords, through surveys and consultative events and full and proper accounting. We welcome feedback and specifically aim to promote a range of techniques to enable people to give us their views on our performance. We plan our work on the basis of 30 year cash flows, balancing income (rents) and expenditure (repayment of loans, investment in stock and running costs) to ensure that Shire Housing can progress and prosper as a sustainable local social enterprise. Whilst our business focus is housing, we know that a range of other local services are essential to ensure quality of life for our customers. We therefore work closely with others, building relationships and strategic partnerships to maximise local benefits. We have worked hard to get where we are today and are mindful of a changing policy environment. As we go forward we are determined to be purposeful in our business focus and fit for purpose - adapting to change and building on success.

Afternoon folks, Alan here…I’m in sunny Galston. 🤩

We purchased a large, 10’ long, inflatable paddling pool for the Early Childhood Centre. They’re going to be using it as a ball pit. 🤩

Great to see as many happy kids outside in the sunshine this afternoon. 🌞

Evening folks, Alan here. So, tonight was our Participatory Budget night at Netherthird Community Centre. I’d like to thank everyone who attended this evening - to either cast a vote - or those who were there to represent a group.

8 groups gave talks/presentations on who they are, what they do and what they are hoping to achieve moving forward; Cumnock Juniors 2019’s, Hazels High Notes, Netherthird Community Garden, Glaisnock Valley Bowling Club, The Nutty Knitters, CAMPS, Netherthird Toddlers Groups and Alzheimer’s Scotland all attended. Almost 60 votes were cast, and the panel collated all of these.

70% of voters had opted for the money to be split equally between the 8 groups, so they received £625 each. 🤩🙌🤩🙌🤩

Alan here, wee late night visit. 😴

Today was a tea dance day at Dumfries House. As per, we hired a bus from Coalfield Community Transport, I picked it up after lunchtime and headed to Galston meet some members of the Galston Over 50’s group.

T’was a great afternoon as usual. There were a good few groups there I knew - people I’ve worked with. Great to catch up with as many faces, and to meet a few new ones.

I have to say, there were some SERIOUS moves being thrown down on the dance floor, a few people had came prepared for this. 💃🏻 🕺🏻🙌

Home Energy Scotland were there as well - pity I never won anything in the raffle. I do need a new kettle, the energy efficient one up for grabs would have done me rather nicely.

I was sitting chatting with Elvis (John Reid) about the history of these events - this is the 11th year they’ve been running - and he was telling me about all the trials and tribulations they’ve dealt with across the years. Just as he finished describing the life story of these dances I said to him “look there though”, as I pointed to the crowd dancing. “I bet all those smiles make all the hard work, the high-lows and the hiccups all worth while?”

He immediately smiled and said “They do, this is what it’s all been about”. 🤩😍🤩

Good morning, tis Alan here…once again. We received this lovely card from New Cumnock Primary School….SOOOO nice. 🥰
