Cumbernauld Living Landscape The Cumbernauld Living Landscape programme aims to reinforce and expand existing green networks and connect the local community to their natural environment.

The Cumbernauld Living Landscape programme aims to reinforce and expand existing green networks and reconnect the people of the town to their natural environment. In the urban landscape this transformational change will benefit local people, help wildlife and support the regional economy. There is increasing evidence that high quality wildlife rich greenspace - connected through woodlands, glens,

meadows and rivers - improves wellbeing and brings social and economic benefits to local communities. However, throughout its short history the new town of Cumbernauld has seen the loss and degradation of many its important natural habitats. Those that have survived have become isolated in a landscape of development and industrialisation. By taking action at a large scale now we can ensure that these areas are able to provide clean air, water and safe retreats for people and wildlife. This is crucial for the future survival of our towns and cities. Creating multifunctional ecosystems and quality green spaces through the heart of the town, the Cumbernauld Living Landscape will protect the environment and create places in which people want to live their lives.

From boosting wellbeing and helping wildlife, to connecting with the local community, our volunteers join our sessions for all sorts of reasons.

Anne McClure, a local writer and one of Cumbernauld Living Landscape’s long-standing volunteers, spoke with the Nurturing Nature group to find out what inspires them to volunteer with the project.

It's Volunteers' Week and we're celebrating the dedicated volunteers that are supporting our project!

First up, a massive thank you to our Nature Counts group who have donated 239 hours since our launch in January!

Our Nature Counts sessions cover a wide range of citizen science activities, including surveying and light conservation tasks.

It’s difficult to protect wildlife without understanding it. To conserve a species, we need information about its population, habitat, and behaviour—and to track how these change over time.

Gathering all this data is challenging, and scientists can’t collect enough on their own. Citizen science helps fill this gap. By involving volunteers, conservationists can gather far more information, for a wider area.

Our Nature Counts sessions are a great way to learn about wildlife while also contributing to its protection. Join us for a one-off session, or weekly!
