Thymol based Varroa treatments, especially Apiguard, which I find many of you love to use, can deliver some results, but ONLY if you use them right and only when they are integrated in a wider treatment scheme.
Let me explain the exact science of why guessing your dosage with thymol or any treatment in general is a quick way to lose your bees.
Thymol works primarily through ev***ration and v***r distribution inside the hive, but contact exposure may also contribute to its acaricidal effects.
The active ingredient turns into a heavy gas that fills the hive atmosphere, suffocating the Varroa mites while they sit on the bodies of your bees.
When the outside temperature climbs above 77°F/25°C, that gel ev***rates at a crazy accelerated rate, releasing a massive, sudden cloud of thymol v***r straight into the brood nest.
If you mindlessly drop a full 50g dose into a hot hive, that concentrated v***r spike will completely overwhelm your bees and will cause more harm than good(I guess you don't want that to happen).
By cutting the dose in half during hot weather, you slow down that ev***ration curve, keeping the v***r levels perfectly safe for the larvae but still lethal for the parasites.
Let's also talk about lowering the dosages without a clear reason.
This lesson stretches far beyond just thymol gels since it applies to every single chemical or organic tool we have at our disposal to fight against these pesky creatures.
When you arbitrarily decide to lower a dosage (for no reason) because you are afraid for the bees, you don't actually kill the mites.
Every single treatment has a mechanism, and we have to respect those mechanisms otherwise they won't work, and we have just thrown the money out the window.
You just expose them to a weak, sub-lethal dose, which is the exact recipe for breeding chemical-resistant super-mites that no treatment will be able to touch in the future.
The biologists who wrote the label spent years calculating the exact balance between killing the parasite and keeping the colony alive, and there is absolutely zero room for amateur guesswork.
The truth is that a medicine and a poison are the exact same substance, and the only difference between them is the precision of your dose.
So, when you treat your hives with any substance, make sure to take into consideration EVERYTHING from the volume of the box, the outside temperature, the strength of EACH individual family, and so on.
