Thank you to everyone who has shared information and videos about the situation in Croydon. We are aware, informed and actively responding. Please continue to be mindful about what you share. Awareness is important, but spreading fear helps no one.
Let’s also give our young people the credit they deserve. The vast majority are sensible, respectful and have no interest in being involved in anything like this. Many simply want to get home, stay safe and focus on what matters to them.
During our patrols next week, as always, we will be engaging with young people, encouraging positive choices and supporting them to stay safe and go home. But prevention goes far beyond patrols.
When young people have after school activities, hobbies and passions, they are far less likely to be aware of, never mind involved in, situations like this. As parents and communities, we must invest in our young people. Schools also play a vital role by providing after school clubs and opportunities that are accessible and affordable for families. It is all well and good people using their platforms to share these videos, but how about coming together to offer real opportunities that help steer young people away from being involved in things like this in the first place.
We meet incredible young people every day, footballers, singers, dancers, athletes, rappers and DJs, all focused on their talents, goals and futures. When young people are engaged, inspired and supported, they simply do not have the time or interest for negativity.
This is an important moment to recognise that boredom and lack of opportunity can play a role, and that positive investment in young people is one of the strongest protections our communities have.
Let’s stay calm, stay responsible with information, and keep supporting the young people who choose the right path every day.
