Working at our apiary at Frylands Wood Scout Centre, we endeavour to build confidence and environmental awareness in children through high quality, hands on education in beekeeping. It teaches you to be meticulous and thorough when looking for problems or searching for an elusive queen. It makes you patient when you have to wait for queens to hatch or look out for the first signs sheβs been mated.
It teaches you resilience when you come across the many setbacks that will inevitably happen. It deepens your knowledge and awareness of the environmental impact of bees and the ways in which humans can help curb their decline. You become more attuned to nature, not just because you are outside more, but because the lifecycle of the honey bee is inextricably linked to the changing of the seasons and the flora and fauna that surround its colony. As a result of this deepened awareness and focus your mental and physical health will improve. I have been a primary school teacher for nearly ten years and I began to think about what a wonderful educational and motivational tool beekeeping could be in schools. I wanted to share what I had learnt and give children the opportunity to benefit in the same way I had. Debbie Burney - Queen Bee at Mrs Burney's Bee Club
