☀️ LOOKING AFTER OUR ANIMALS IN THE HEAT ☀️

It’s another very hot day here at Perthshire Zoo, and keeping everyone comfortable and safe is our top priority!

✅ Shade everywhere – sunshades and natural shaded areas available for every animal, so no‑one is left in full sun.

💧 Fresh water on tap – every enclosure has two water bowls, checked and refilled several times throughout the day.

🥗 Hydration‑first diets – we’ve adjusted feeding plans to include extra water‑rich foods, and all pellets are soaked before serving.

❄️ Cool enrichment – think frozen berries for our lemurs and other species‑specific treats to keep them active and refreshed.

🐶 Visiting with your dog?
We love welcoming four‑legged friends — but please remember dogs overheat quickly! We have water stations around the park, but keep them in shade and avoid long spells in direct sun.

⚠️ Important reminder: NEVER leave children or dogs in a parked car — even for a few minutes, and even with windows open. Temperatures rise dangerously fast.

Our café and shop are fully stocked with cold drinks, ice‑creams and treats — perfect for a fun, comfortable day out.

🐒 WEIGH DAY FOR OUR WHITE‑HEADED LEMURS! 🐒

It’s that time again — weigh day here at Perthshire Zoo! 📏🍌

We have our wonderful group of White‑headed brown Lemurs (Eulemur albifrons), and we weigh them regularly right at feed time. It’s done in a calm, familiar way so it never causes them any stress — just part of their normal daily routine.

And the best part? Watching our little one learn! 🐣💛

Just like in the wild, the best way for a baby lemur to pick up new skills is by watching and copying his family. He’s been observing closely, stepping up, and he’s doing brilliantly — growing strong, healthy, and confident every single day. We couldn’t be happier with how well he’s doing!

🐒 White‑fronted Brown Lemurs – Human‑Animal Relationship & Care Philosophy

At Perthshire Zoo, our work with white‑fronted brown lemurs follows a carefully balanced approach: minimal direct physical contact, but consistent, positive interaction to build trust and understanding.

✅ Our ‘hands‑off’ principle

This mimics their natural independence and reduces unnecessary disturbance, stress, or risk of transferring germs between people and animals. It also helps preserve their natural behaviours — essential for their welfare and for maintaining skills that matter if species conservation or reintroduction programmes are involved.

✅ Building a strong, respectful bond

Even without regular handling, keepers build a reliable relationship through:

• predictable daily routines

• calm voice and body language

• observing and learning each lemur’s individual habits and personality

• positive reinforcement training

Why this matters:
When lemurs trust their keepers, they are calmer and more willing to cooperate voluntarily — making health checks, feeding adjustments, medication or minor treatments far easier, safer, and less stressful for them and for the team.

We build trust — not over‑handling — so their welfare stays high, while care and veterinary support remain effective when needed.
