Wednesday 10th. The weather at the Basin was dry and, at times, sunny, allowing the team to carry with the work on the lock wing walls. They are currently replacing some of the large coping stones including the one that held the hinge fixing for the lock gate.
The flooding has returned after what seems a very short dry period, but it did allow time the Basin etc to get its late cutting, preparing for next years wild flowers to burst forth.
The water level under the aqueduct is high and will no doubt rise even more as winter progress's.
The new aqueduct by Weymoor Bridge is nearly complete and is filled with water giving a glimpse of things to come.

They don't call it the 'Flood Relief Aqueduct' for nothing. Just two weeks after the repair to the arch was finished and the top of the culvert is now totally submerged. Probability is that's the last we'll see of it until next spring. This week the team continued their work on the walls of the section of the lock so far excavated. One day we will get permission to clear the rest of the lock which should be in good condition, only having just been backfilled probably in the 1960s.

The Culvert Arch face on the east side of the aqueduct has now been completely repaired. The team, taking advantage of the continuing dry condition of the channel, finished the work, even removing most of the dead tree stump. Hopefully it will not need any more attention for another 200 years. This is an example of what a small team of dedicated volunteers can achieve. Why not come along and visit us and maybe get involved. [email protected] or [email protected] (workparties).

Earlier this year as the water levels receded, we were concerned to see the deterioration to one of the culvert faces on the east side of the flood relief aqueduct. Initially we thought it might indicate a more serious problem with the culvert, but, fortunately, the culvert looks OK. When the bed had dried, Vince and his team got to work with the repair, and this is now nearly complete. The tree root that caused the problem has not been fully removed, but the situation will be monitored and action taken as required.

Into the new year and things are going well. We have complete our first mow of the year, and that's it until October. One side of the lock wing wall has had all of the bull nose bricks laid and is looking good and the Snowdrops and Daffodils have made an appearance.

The Trustees and Volunteers would like to wish everybody a Happy Christmas.
I don't think we will be seeing this at the Basin this Christmas.

We hadn't planned on re-watering the canal just yet. (Thank -you Bob for the pictures). The video is the run-off channel behind the cottage from the aqueduct.
