The Rivalry Cup

Earlier this month, a team of G&P cadets headed up to Altcar Training Camp, near Liverpool, to compete in the Army Cadets Rivalry Cup. Designed to test a wide range of skills, teamwork and determination, it doesn’t necessarily contain the events that you would typically expect at a sports meet! Cadets compete in 10 sporting disciplines, including a carrying a stretcher race, tyre flip, laser pistol shooting and much more, including some of the more typical sporting challenges.

Twenty-three County Teams from across the UK attended, so there were plenty of opportunities for fun, friendships and of course a little rivalry - all whilst demonstrating true sportsmanship of course! The team were fantastic ambassadors for the county as we would expect, and although they didn’t place in the medal winners this time, they came away with a whole new set of skills, and can’t wait until next year! A huge thank you also to our adults for giving up their weekend to support the team’s attendance and encouraging them every step of the way!

If you would like to find out more about what we offer for both adults and young people, or about how you can get involved, why not drop us a message? You never know. We might be just what you’re looking for!

Leadership Development

There are many opportunities for adults to undertake courses and complete qualifications that support them not only in the Army Cadets, but also in their civilian jobs. Jason Walters has recently returned from the Prince William of Gloucester Barracks in Grantham having completed the newly named Army Cadets Commissioning Course, which is the development programme for Office Training.

The course is designed to develop and build leadership and management techniques and equip adult volunteers with the necessary skills to enable to them to take on more senior roles within their counties. The four day course, developing the next generation of ACF leaders, focuses heavily on leadership shared from the Army School of Leadership and equips new officers with the right skills and attitudes to command. Following the Army Cadet Leadership Code, which outlines the core values and standards expected of cadets and adult volunteers, it emphasises the importance of good leadership through behaviors such as leading by example, encouraging thinking, and applying reward and discipline.

The 7 Core Leadership Behaviors

🌟Lead by Example: Set the standard in everything you do. Your actions dictate the team's culture.
🌟Encourage Thinking: Foster innovation, allow for calculated risk, and encourage your team to solve problems.
🌟Apply Reward and Discipline: Recognise success and address underperformance fairly, consistently, and without delay.
🌟Demand High Performance: Push individuals and the team to reach their full potential.
🌟Encourage Confidence in the Team: Build mutual trust, belief, and a strong sense of belonging among all members.
🌟Recognise Individual Strengths and Weaknesses: Know your people personally so you can utilize their skills effectively and support their development.
🌟Strive for Team Goals: Ensure all individual efforts align with the broader mission and purpose.

Congratulations to Jason on successfully completing his course. If you would like to find out more about leadership in the Army Cadets, or what we offer for both adults and young people, why not get in touch? You never know, we might be just what you’re looking for!

Cwmbran’s Big Event!

C Company Cadets from a range of detachments joined together yesterday at Cwmbran’s ‘Big Event’ to demonstrate to the local community some of the skills and subjects they learn through the Army Cadets.

There were plenty of opportunities for adults and children to get involved with First Aid and Fieldcraft, learning new skills and even trying out some kit! Dylan the Dragon, our G&P mascot, was a massive hit with both children and parents as he got up to his usual mischievous antics.

As expected, the cadets were excellent ambassadors, and there was plenty of positive feedback back from the local community, along with lots of requests for more information about how to get involved.

What an incredible achievement!

34 Band Members
A Commandant
An ACF Ambassador
A County Training Officer
5 Mountains Leaders
A member of the Professional Support Team

Carrying:

Three piccolos, five clarinets, two alto saxes, three tenor saxes, two french horns, four corners, five trombones, a euphonium, a tuba, four side drums, a bass drum, three sets of cymbals and a triangle!

With supporting members of the public, they all made it to the summit in just a bit of a gale, played in some very challenging conditions and returned triumphant!

The Deputy Commandant and Padre provided surprise hot dogs and hot chocolate on their return, and the team cooked a hot BBQ Breakfast Brunch this morning provided by Morrisons Abergavenny.

It’s all about the team. And we have an amazing one!

Mountains and Music!

The Band and Drums were thrilled to receive this message from the Band of the Welsh Guards today ahead of their climb up Sugar Loaf Mountain.

Tomorrow evening, they will climb, with their instruments, to play on the summit of Sugar Loaf at midnight, as part of their fundraising efforts to support their trip to play in a Military Tattoo in Colorado in September. If you live close to Abergavenny, you might just hear some lilting music in the distance!

If you would like to support their trip, you can sponsor a cadet or adult or make a donation by clicking on the link in the comments.

A Normandy Takeover!

Team: Normandy Company
Challenge: Preparation for Summer Camp
Location: Cwrt-y-Gollen Training Camp

They came, they worked, they conquered! On the first of their final pair of training weekends before Summer Camp, Normandy Company got ahead of the action with intensive training, ready for those all important assessments in a few weeks time. There were weapon handling tests, Skill at Arms training (and a few competitions too) challenges on the DCCT, Fieldcraft, and Navigation and Expedition: plenty going on to keep everyone enthused, engaged and focused on their personal challenges.

Normandy are the county wide training company responsible for 2* Training, delivering key elements to cadets from across G&P, utilising adults often with additional skills and qualifications. It was intense, but great fun, and though they rain dipped in and out, it didn’t dampen spirits or get in the way of a night out on the training area for the Fieldcraft Crew! The cadets are ready and prepared now for their final assessments, giving them extra qualifications in time for Summer Camp in August.

A massive thank you to the adult team for enabling such a fantastic weekend of training, and to the cadets for their enthusiasm, focus and humour! We’re looking forward to their assessment weekend and handing out a few star badges!

If you would like to find out more about what we offer for adults and young people, or how you could get involved, why not get in touch? You never know, we might be just what you’re looking for!

Ordinary People Doing Extraordinary Things!

On this final day of Volunteers Week 2026, we share the story of two extraordinary volunteers who have enabled to cadet experience at our HQ to continue over the last few months: Joan Jones and Pat Noonan.

Due to logistical difficulties, earlier this year, we found ourselves in a situation where we were unable to provide catering at our HQ. This presented huge challenges for the county, as in order to continue the high level of successful weekend and week long training that we are so proud of, we need to be able to feed the cadets and adults on site! Many options were considered, before Joan and Pat, supported by a small team of CFAVs, stepped in to provide the catering cover that would enable the cadet experience: weekend training camps, week long camps and events, to continue.

Joan, a retired School chef and Army Reserve chef, and Pat, whose daytime job is a chef in a prison, knew that they brought with them the skills and experience needed to provide an interim solution to the challenges that the county was facing. And solve it they did! These two incredible volunteers and their team have provided food of an exceptional standard, following policy and protocols to the letter, planning and writing menus, catering for a whole range of dietary needs, budgeting, shopping, cooking from scratch and serving and clearing up after the hoards of hungry young people and adults that have passed through the cookhouse over the last few months. They have done (and are continuing to do) an amazing job, and the Deputy Commandant was proud to promote them both to Staff Sergeant on a recent weekend.

Enabling these events to happen takes a team, a team who bring their own unique backgrounds, experiences and skills to the table, and that is how we succeed. Joan, Pat - we are in awe of your skills and talents, what you have done is simply amazing!

If you would like to find out more about what we offer for both adults and young people or how you can get involved, why not drop us a message? You never know, we might be just what you’re looking for!

Volunteers Week 2026

Everyone has their own reasons for joining the Army Cadets, and they come from all walks of life and with a huge range of backgrounds and experiences. One of our newer volunteers is Sergeant Anne Neale.

Anne is certainly no stranger to the Army Cadets. Her son, Liam, was an Army Cadet, now aged out and back as an adult instructor, and her husband is an instructor too! She told us:

‘I joined the Army Cadets to give something back. My son was a cadet and it made a massive difference to him and he achieved so much. I wanted to give back and do the same for other cadets and help support activities and events, etc. It is so rewarding watching the cadets grow with confidence and achieve their passes and make progress.’

You don’t need a military background, you don’t need previous experience - just a bit of spare time and a desire to help shape the futures of young people. Anne, along with some other adults and cadets from G&P will be at the Cwmbran Big Event next week. If you’re interested in finding out a bit more about what we offer for adults and young people and how to get involved, why not pop along and have a chat? Alternatively, you can always send us a message. You never know, we might be just what you’re looking for!

National Volunteers Week 2026

As part of our focus on our Cadet Force Adult Volunteers, today we find out a little more about our County Training Officer, Major Sarah Russell…

“I became a Cadet Force Adult Volunteer because I wanted to do something that genuinely makes a difference - helping young people build confidence, resilience, and life skills, while giving something back to the community. It’s something I’m really passionate about, and it also reflects my belief that leadership isn’t about job titles, it’s about how you show up and the impact you have on others.

As the County Training Officer, I get to take that a step further by supporting and developing other adult volunteers. I focus on helping them see training as something worthwhile, not just a requirement - building their confidence, skills and understanding, so they feel empowered to deliver great experiences for cadets. For me, it’s about creating the right environment where people want to learn, grow, and contribute, because that’s what ultimately makes the biggest difference.”

If you would like to find out more about what the Army Cadets offers for both adults and young people, why not get in touch? You never know, we might be just what you’re looking for!
