The Diaries of Mike and Jim
Well this was a tough one!
At Mike’s request we set out to walk through Cromwell’s Cutting, very much going round the houses (or in this case fields and back lanes!) to get there.
Taking our time (and with a few stops!) we climbed the 136 (I think!) steps from the High Street up to Barnfield, headed past QE School and then across the fields and down to Salmon Hutch.
Boy, was it blowing a hooley up there and with the dark, moody clouds interspersed with a bit of sun creating a strange light and atmosphere, it really felt like we were heading into nowhere.
Through the level crossing, over the River Yeo and bear right to go through Uton.
Continuing on, we stopped at the bridge over the railway line for a drinks break and just as we arrived a train appeared on the track and just as the train was about to go under the bridge a huge tractor and trailer came round the corner which forced us to duck for cover in the verge!
We carried on through the lanes, back over the Yeo, and soon arrived at Moorlake Cross. Straight over the road and into the valley path which joins up with Pitt Hill. This path is so hidden away and beautifully picturesque it is one of my favourite places we’ve visited. Absolutely stunning.
Another drinks break when we arrived at the end of the path set us up for the climb up and through the Cutting. If there’s an eerier place in Crediton, please let us know where it is and we’ll take a hike there!
With the noise of the wind rushing around us as we walked, the darkness the Cutting creates and the history involved, it is truly a local wonder and a quite spooky place to be!
After that, finally, a lovely bit of downhill taking us to Threshers, the little path that runs below Greenway, St Saviours Car Park and back to the High Street.
A long one, but certainly a good one. Plenty of cobwebs blown away, some terrific views across Crediton and a very enjoyable sit-down when we got back!
