Crawley Model Railway Society

Crawley Model Railway Society Welcome to the Crawley Model Railway Society page, where we provide information about our society and its activities.

The Society was founded in 1958 by a small group of enthusiasts & by 1960 had established a permanent home. After the great storm in October 1987 totally destroyed the original clubroom, the centre was completely rebuilt. We now have our own facilities with space for 5 medium / large layouts plus a lounge & refreshment area. The Society is often invited to exhibit layouts at model railway shows th

roughout England; therefore there is an emphasis on layout building & operating. Other society activities include: demonstrations of various modelling techniques, video & slide evenings, visits to places of railway interest, social events, publishing our own quarterly newsletter "The Ashpan", quiz evenings & an annual competition. We encourage members from all ages (minimum age for membership is 12 years old), scales & gauges to participate in the design, construction & operation of all layouts not just their chosen gauge.

Here we see a highly modified KATO F40ph, with a special Soundtraxx decoder for American kato locos. Lights have been custom fitted to enable the flashing warning lights to work which is a feature missing from the original kato model. The model depicts the ‘Metra’ rail company which is the name of Chicago’s current commuter trains (much more beefy than our UK commuter trains!)

Behind trails a rake of double deck ‘gallery’ cars used for the actual commuting part
