A brief history of Crawley Astronomical Society

CAS was established in the early 1960s, encouraged by Patrick Moore who lived in East Grinstead at the time. The society welcomes anyone interested in stars, planets, galaxies, the universe and all the associated kit. Astronomy can be anything from looking at the night sky with a simple pair of binoculars to measuring the distances and atomic struct

ure of stars from your back garden, or even studying for a PhD and making astronomy your profession, working with vast instruments on a Chilean mountain top. We have approximately 25 current members who range from newer members just beginning to find their way around the night sky to members who have been observing the stars for many years and are keen to pass on their knowledge. Some of our members are keen astro-photographers, and that forms an important part of our activities. Some of their images are show-cased in the Gallery of this site. We have recently acquired our own Observatory and are currently equipping this for use. Our monthly meetings cover varying topics of astronomical interest and usually include a guest speaker.

πŸš€ Main Talk: Using Smart Telescopes for Astrophotography
with Dr Lilian Hobbs FRAS ARPS

There’s a revolution happening in astrophotography, and it’s called the Smart Telescope. These affordable, app-controlled devices are opening up deep-sky imaging to everyone – even from light-polluted back gardens.

Dr Hobbs will explore whether these clever systems are a game-changer or just another gadget. Discover what they can do, what they can’t, and whether it’s time to add one to your kit.

πŸ“Έ Featuring a stunning 3-hour image of the North America Nebula!

πŸ‘©β€πŸš€ About the Speaker:
Dr Lilian Hobbs is a seasoned astrophotographer, Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society, and a regular on the BBC’s Sky at Night. She brings clarity, passion, and 20+ years of experience to every talk.
