Crantock Bale Push

Crantock Bale Push The Big Bale Push at Crantock - “You don't have to be mad to take part, but it certainly helps” WHERE IT ALL STARTED…..

The concept of the Bale Push in Crantock came from the seed of an idea which grew and grew! Farmer Chris Eustice discussed it with a few locals in various hostelries - The Treguth and The Old Albion to name but two. The seed was sown and Chris harvested the idea, baled it and discussed it with John Richards who immediately saw its merits! A fairly hilarious Test Push was organised and four local g

entlemen, namely Kittsy, Casey, Millsy and Tim Eustice formed a team. Assisted by flag-waving Jim Hardy and with Chris Eustice the mobile marshal directing proceedings, and alerting any unsuspecting passers-by, a Push was achieved around the proposed circuit..........! Three weeks later with the valuable assistance of local sponsors and supporters BIG BALE PUSH 2000 was organised. That first event raised over £800 for Halwyn Parc and Crantock had a new annual local fundraising event and the rest is history! The manner in which the original event has grown that has surpassed the expectations of its founder members and the money raised by the event now exceeds £136,000 and we are now in our twenty second year and our event has gone from strength to strength. Much of our revenue is provided by the 130 individuals and companies who sponsor and advertise in this Magazine [we are hugely grateful to them]. However, this figure does not include the monies raised during the evening by the organisations that have their stalls on site or the monies raised by individual teams who have been sponsored to take part. Besides providing an enjoyable evening for all concerned; the evening does have serious intent and that is, of course to raise money to support others within our local and wider community. Since 2000 we have supported more than 60 different organisations making donations to them ranging from £100 to over £3000. Each year the selection of organisations to support is very difficult and many hours are spent deliberating over which worthy causes to adopt.

25th CRANTOCK BALE PUSH 2025 DONATES £18,500 TO CORNISH GROUPS
The final event of the Crantock Bale Push calendar, the Annual Presentation Evening took place at the Old Albion Inn on Monday 27th October with a photo call outside the Lychgate at St Carantoc Church before we started the cheque presentations and enjoyed the success of another year.
Bale Push Committee Chairman welcomed our guests and gave a quick summary of our successful September event.
Nigel stated that “The event saw 106 teams taking part and scores of spectators enjoying the late summer’s evening bale rolling spectacular and the entertainment from local 1940’s Crooner Andy Marshall. We are delighted that due to the continued support from the Bale Push Magazine advertisers and our event sponsors Sharps Brewery, The Bowgie, The Garage Company Ltd, Start and Co, David Ball Agencies and Legacy Properties, The Garage Co Ltd, St Agnes Bakery and Pilgrims UK and with matched funding from Visa we are able to donate £18,500 to this year’s chosen organisations and charities. Since the Bale Push started in 2000 we have now raised over £189,900 which has been donated to local charities and organisations”.
Our involvement with Visa meant that we were able to present match funded cheques to Cornwall Hospice Care and Crantock Surf Life Saving Club and special thanks to John Trainer for his continued support.
Cheques for were presented to representatives from: Cornwall Hospice Care,
Crantock SLSC, Crantock Baby and Toddler Group, Crantock Christmas Lights,
Crantock Does Poppies, Crantock Memorial Hall, Crantock Methodist Church, Crantock Parish Magazine, Crantock Rowing Club, Crantock Village Hall, Cubert and Holywell Newsletter, Cubert School PTFA, Holywell SLSC, St Carantoc Church and to Eva Blackford to support her fundraising following her selection to represent England at the ISA World Surfing Championships in Peru.
The Bale Push Committee would like to thank our sponsors and advertisers for their support and enthusiasm, our wonderful team of helpers for all their hard work and for the residents of Crantock village for their continued tolerance.
Special thanks to Evelyn, Harry and the staff of the Old Albion for hosting the evening and for providing such a wonderful buffet. We look forward to seeing everyone again on Friday 11th September 2026.

CRANTOCK BALE PUSH 2025
A hundred and six teams brave the unpredictable conditions to take part in the 25th Crantock Bale Push
With rain and windy weather forecast it was a closed call whether to cancel our village event however it was decided that our brave Bale Pushers some who have travelled miles and planned their holidays around the Bale Push would take part even in the rain! The rain, other than a few showers held off long enough for us to get through all the races without competitors getting too wet. The wetter conditions made the bales much heavier and more difficult to control and push.
Chairman Nigel Eustice said ‘The crowds arrived in good time to get registered for the Junior races and we started rolling just after 5pm. Our much loved Bale Man was located on the village triangle greeted the crowds as they arrived in the village.
A highlight for many was 1940’s Crooner Andy Marshall had spectators singing and dancing around the Memorial Hall, thus creating a delightful party atmosphere for all to enjoy. Visitors were able to grab a bite to eat from our barbi then browse the stalls and learn about the work of Cornwall Hospice Care, make purchases from our Bale Push merchandise suppliers Brand88 and buy handmade poppies from our Crantock Does Poppies stall.
Spokesman Tony Brokenshire said, 'We are all waiting with bated breath for the final figure of money raised this year, and we look forward to making donations to Cornwall Hospice Care and local community based groups,’ said Tony. 'But it will be a while before the final figure is known. We are so grateful to our sponsors Sharp’s Brewery, The Garage Company Ltd, Start and Co, Legacy Properties and David Ball Agencies for their sponsorship and to all the advertisers to support our Bale Push Magazine.
Forty three Junior teams took in the three categories. It is always good to see so many children taking part in the event and their happy smiling faces and competitive approach makes the event so worthwhile. Many of the youngsters taking part are the children of parents who themselves took part in previous years. The children’s races always have a special lighter weight bale and of course, lots of help from our marshals!
In the Ladies event was won for the 17th time by the highly successful Newquay Hockey Club team ‘Chicks with Sticks’ in the amazing time of 2 minutes and 3 seconds. The Open category is always hotly contested last year’s winners ‘Roll at Fat One’ powered their was to another victory with second and third places were closely fought with Kernow Strength and Conditioning just beating Going Commando. ‘The 180’s [combined ages of all members of the teams] winning team for the second year was ‘North Somerset Heavy Rollers’ in an impressive time of 3.16.70.
'The fun evening continued after the last race as the two village Pubs had live music from The Quest and Black Friday and to help the evening roll on until the early hours of Saturday morning!', said Chairman and commentator Nigel Eustice.
'We are so grateful for the generosity and help from The Cornishman, Jam Jar Kitchen and Old Albion along with goodwill from all in the village and our much wider community. We have a big team of willing helpers and could not run the event without this support,' continued Nigel. ‘The fun continued the following day with an aptly named ‘Roll Over Party’ at Halwyn.
‘We now look forward to our Presentation Evening in October where we catch up with supporters and representatives of Cornwall Hospice Care and local groups. Planning is already underway for the next Bale Push on the 11th September 2026’.
