What could Community Wealth Building mean for Mull?

For an island community like ours, questions about who has power, who makes decisions, and where the wealth generated locally ends up really matter.

Whether it’s housing, land, local businesses, tourism, renewable energy, public services or community assets, there are huge opportunities to think differently about how Mull can build a stronger, more resilient local economy — with local people having a real say and a greater share in the benefits.

That’s why this upcoming online workshop from SCDC is worth a look:

📅 Tuesday 15 September
⏰ 6.30–8.30pm
💻 Online

“Power, Participation and Prosperity: Shaping Scotland’s Future Together” will explore the links between Community Wealth Building and Democracy Matters, including how communities can have greater influence over decision-making and local economies.

For those of us interested in the future of Mull and our island communities, this is an opportunity to learn, listen and think about what these ideas could mean locally.

We believe that everyone deserves the chance to live and work in the community they call home!

That's why we continue to work alongside local people and housing partners to find ways to increase housing on the islands, supporting families, workers and future generations to put down roots here.

People, Place and Nature!

From recycling and reuse projects to native tree planting, litter picking, wildlife protection, nature education and welcoming facilities for residents and visitors, we help care for the islands and the environment we all depend on.

These projects support local employment, strengthen the local economy and help protect our natural heritage, wildlife and landscapes for future generations.

Many people know the Mull and Iona Community Trust by name, but not everyone knows what we actually do.

For almost 30 years, we've worked alongside local people, groups and public sector partners to provide housing, community facilities, transport, wellbeing, health and environmental initiatives.

This week, we'll be celebrating our work and sharing stories about what can be achieved when we work together!

Please vote for us today and help us have a chance of winning £1,000!

Every single day, we work alongside other local people to run services that make a real difference across Mull and Iona, including:

🚌 Community transport, helping older people and those without access to a car to shop, socialise and attend GP and hospital appointments.
❤️ A first responder service and heartstart defibrillator network.
🎵 A dementia-friendly singing group, Mull Musical Minds.
🏠 Affordable housing, helping tackle the islands' housing crisis.
🌿 Environmental projects including recycling, reuse, nature restoration and wildlife protection.
🚶 Community and visitor facilities, including local paths and public spaces.

These services provide year-round local employment, support local people, businesses and visitors, and help protect and enhance our natural environment.

Winning this funding would help us continue supporting these vital projects.

✅ It only takes a minutes to vote.
✅ Every vote increases our chances of winning.
✅ Please share with your friends, family and colleagues.

Thank you for your support! 💙

📣 MULL RESIDENTS: HAVE YOUR SAY

We can’t control the weather — but we can make sure Mull’s voice is heard when it comes to preparing for extreme weather and power cuts.

SSE is asking communities to share their experiences through its Community Resilience Survey.

For an island community like Mull, longer power cuts and severe weather can have a significant impact on households, businesses and community services. This is an opportunity to tell SSE about our experiences, challenges and what support would make a difference.

The survey asks about:
⚡ Preparing for power cuts and extreme weather
🏠 Coping when outages last longer
🤝 What support communities need
🔌 What we expect from our electricity network

If you live on Mull, please take a few minutes to complete the survey. The more local voices that respond, the better the picture of what matters to our community.

🗓️ Open until 14 September 2026 at 7pm
