We are an innovative education charity which excites young people about science, tech and engineering through sailing

The 1851 Trust and leading education programme STEM Crew are the Race for the Future Purpose Partner to the Great Britain SailGP team, with unrivalled access to the people, design and technological and sustinability developments behind this professional sailing team. Through a combination of educational resources, roadshows and activities, the 1851 Trust will demonstrate the relevance of STEM subjects to real life situations and the range of career opportunities available to young people who pursue STEM subjects, to inspire the next generation to become problem solvers of the future.

Why do we do STEM Crew Live?

The future STEM talent is already in our classrooms. Talent isn't the problem - opportunity is.

The numbers tell the story:
🔧 173,000+ - the UK's current STEM worker shortfall
🌍 1 in 5 - UK jobs that will need green skills by 2030
👨‍👩‍👧 51% - parents from lower-income backgrounds who think their child is 'unlikely' to have a STEM career
📉 26% vs 46% - GCSE students doing hands-on practical work vs. just watching videos instead (Engineering UK)

Too many young people, especially from disadvantaged backgrounds, never get the spark that helps them imagine a STEM future for themselves.

That's where we come in.

At the 1851 Trust, we use the power of sport to connect classroom learning to the real world. STEM Crew Live brings STEM to life through hands-on challenges, and our careers speed networking puts young people face-to-face with STEM professionals - broadening horizons and busting myths about who works in STEM.

National Coding Week fact: the first computer bug was an actual bug 🐛💻

Back in 1947, engineers found a moth stuck in the Harvard Mark II computer, causing it to malfunction - an incident often credited as the origin of the term "debugging".

Coding isn't just about writing code, it's about problem-solving when things don't go to plan. A skill for STEM (and life!).
