Some of the work that the team are involved in and some that they will be involved in include:
- 1-1 therapy sessions for individuals requiring mental health support. This will be done in partnership with a local Mental Health Charity.
- Benefit for recovering service personnel (Military, fire and Police). Visits will be provided and offered to individuals and their families whom have experienced physical, psychological and/or emotional trauma through the ex*****on of their duties.
- Dogs will be taken into educational establishments. It is believed that if children are taught how to treat/care for animals, it will help to demonstrate responsibility, compassion and empathy for others. Other avenues for education involves animal assisted education, it has been shown that when a dog is present children increase their ability to learn in areas such as reading and writing.
- It is also hoped that the activities will benefit the community at large through the education about sled dogs and their environment, working sled dogs, dog training and care. In the future it is planned that Sled dogs as therapy will recruit volunteers who would like to use their own sled dogs in animal assisted activities. Any potential volunteers would need to have liability insurance (privately or through SDAT), would need to have their dog pass a temperament test and would also need to aide by the code of ethics laid down by the Society for Compassionate Animal Studies. As a big part of our mission is through education SDAT will also help those with sled dogs that need advice with training, problem behaviors etc.
