Early detection can change everything.

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed that he has been diagnosed with aggressive prostate cancer — but, importantly, it was found early.

That is exactly why testing matters.

A simple PSA blood test can help indicate your risk, often before symptoms appear. If you are a man over 40, please don’t put it off.

Balsall Common Lions are holding our next Prostate Screening Event in October.

Book your test here:

Please share this message with husbands, partners, dads, brothers, sons, friends and colleagues.

It could save a life.

The former Top Gear presenter did not clarify what type of cancer he had been diagnosed with.

💙 NEXT WEEKEND, ON FATHER’S DAY, GIVE DAD A GIFT THAT REALLY MATTERS💙

We all buy cards, socks, chocolates and gadgets for Father’s Day…

But one of the most valuable gifts you can give your dad, grandad, husband, brother, uncle or friend is a gentle reminder to look after his health.

Prostate cancer is now the most common cancer in men in the UK, yet many men have no symptoms in the early stages. That’s why early detection is so important.

Balsall Common Lions is hosting a Prostate Screening Event on Saturday 10 October 2026 at Heart of England School, in partnership with the Graham Fulford Charitable Trust.

Thanks to support from our sponsors, donors and local community, the PSA blood test is available for just £15, subsidised from the full cost of £26.

❤️ This Father’s Day, why not encourage the men you care about to book their test?

Saving Mothers and Babies – Wherever Birth Happens

Balsall Common Lions are proud to have donated £5,000 towards the provision of five Out-of-Hospital Birth Bags for use in Ukraine.

While the war in Ukraine may have slipped from the headlines, it remains a daily reality for millions of people. Healthcare infrastructure has been damaged, emergency services are under immense pressure, and many maternity teams are working in extremely challenging conditions.

Developed by the maternity experts at Baby Lifeline and supported through Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF), each Birth Bag contains the essential equipment needed to support normal births and emergency situations when hospital care may not be available.

More than 500 healthcare centres in Ukraine need support, and the long-term goal is to provide 500 Birth Bags, giving nationwide coverage for mothers and babies.

Every bag helps provide healthcare professionals with the equipment, organisation and confidence they need when every second counts.

We are delighted to play our part in this important humanitarian project and help ensure that, even in the most difficult circumstances, mothers and babies receive the care they deserve.

Because every baby deserves a safe first breath.

Huge congratulations to Mikey on receiving an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours — an outstanding and thoroughly deserved achievement.

Balsall Common Lions have been proud to support Mikey and Mikey's Wish - Verbal Dyspraxia Awareness for approximately ten years. We have watched with admiration as this remarkable young man has worked tirelessly to help others and make such a positive difference.

We could not be more pleased to see Mikey’s dedication and achievements recognised in this very special way. Congratulations, Mikey — everyone at Balsall Common Lions is incredibly proud of you!

Mikey’s extremely proud mum

I can finally share the hardest secret I’ve ever had to keep! We all know how I like to share proud moments. Well, I have been waiting 6 weeks to be able to write this post and finally share this amazing news with the world!

Mikey has received an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours!

For those who might not know, an MBE (Member of the Order of the British Empire) is a prestigious royal honour awarded by our King to individuals for outstanding achievements or significant long-lasting service to their local community or chosen field.

As a mum, I was already extremely proud of Mikey for everything he has overcome and the way he supports and fights for others. This amazing young man has achieved more in his 25 years than I ever imagined possible.

Yesterday he was one of the 6 recipients of a King’s Birthday Honour to be invited to a press conference at Admiralty House in London. He had 9 interviews with the National press, answering questions and talking for 2 hours, and he handled it like a pro!

Please join me in congratulating him on receiving this outstanding honour.

Helping Young Readers Care for Our Planet

Lion June Glynn recently visited Balsall Common Library to deliver a set of Wild Tribe Heroes books, where she was welcomed by Library Manager Amanda Jones.

These beautifully illustrated children’s stories introduce important environmental issues in a gentle and engaging way. Through memorable animal characters and real-world themes, the books help young readers learn about topics such as litter, plastic pollution, wildlife protection and caring for our natural world.

We are delighted to support local children with books that encourage reading while inspiring the next generation to make a positive difference to the environment.

We hope the stories will be enjoyed by many families visiting the library.

A fantastic night for a fantastic cause!

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us for Sunday evening’s Balsall Common Lions Charity Quiz. There was a brilliant atmosphere throughout the evening, and together we raised an amazing £480 for CoppaFeel!

Congratulations to our winning team, The Groupon Girls, captained by Emma from CoppaFeel! 🏆

Special thanks to The White Horse for generously donating the prizes, to all of our volunteers who helped make the evening run so smoothly, and most of all to the many generous people who came along to support Emma and her fundraising efforts.

We wish Emma the very best of luck for her hiking challenge in Montenegro in a few weeks’ time. We are sure she will do brilliantly! 🥾⛰️

Thank you once again for making it such an enjoyable and successful evening.
