If you add a good balance of 'green' and 'brown materials and turn your compost frequently to add in lots of air, or have a specially designed hot composting bin, you can get compost in as little as 12 weeks, but otherwise be prepared for the process to take 12 to 18 months - and either method is fine.

How do you know if your compost is the right consistency, not too wet or too dry? A squeeze test will help you check this. Your compost should be damp but not wet, similar to a wrung out sponge.

Compost bins can often be found advertised for FREE on local Freecycle or Freegle groups, which means you can start composting without spending any money at all. This way you will also be saving the planet by reusing something that its previous owner no longer wants. If you can't find any advertised, try putting a 'wanted' post on your local group page. You may just find that someone has an old bin they need to get rid of and would be happy to let you have it for free.

Secateurs, shears or loppers not cutting like they used to? Don't be too hasty to throw them away and replace them! Take them along to your nearest Repair Cafe and get them fixed or sharpened by an experienced volunteer repairer to give them a new lease of life.

And it's not just garden tools that can be repaired. Depending on the volunteers available, your clothes, furniture, toys and even electricals, computers and mobile phones can be brought back to life, saving you money and conserving precious natural resources.

Find your nearest Repair Cafe at www.repaircafe.org. None near you? You might have an initiative near you that hasn't registered to be an official Repair Cafe. Try searching on the internet with the name of your area and the word 'repair' and you might be surprised what you find!

Be proud of your compost bin! Although it may be tempting to hide your compost bin in the corner of your garden, make sure it is accessible as you should be visiting it regularly with kitchen scraps. Remember, siting your compost bin on bare earth is better but it will still work on hard ground.

A compost heap is cheap!

You don't need to buy an expensive compost bin, a heap will work just as well, and can be as big or a small as you have space for. If you have an open heap, it is always worth considering covering it with a large waterproof covering as this will help maintain moisture levels and prevent it from drying out in warm or windy weather. It will also stop it getting too saturated with water if there is lots of rain.
