The George Eliot Fellowship

The George Eliot Fellowship The George Eliot Fellowship exists to honour George Eliot & promote interest in her life and works.

The George Eliot Fellowship was founded by Mr A F Cross on 9 November 1930. Mr Cross was the editor of the Nuneaton Chronicle newspaper and had been campaigning for some 25 years for a memorial to George Eliot in her native town, Nuneaton. During the summer of 1930 Mr Cross handed over the Editorial chair of the Nuneaton Chronicle to a Cambridge undergraduate. The undergraduate in turn managed to

elicit contributions from eminent literary men of the day such as George Bernard Shaw by asking them the question, "Should Nuneaton erect a memorial to George Eliot? If so, what form should it take?" The majority of the writers he approached were surprised that a memorial did not already exist. Mr Cross concluded that Nuneaton's apathy should be allowed to continue no longer. He was certain that corporate action was now more important than individual effort and that the formation of a literacy society was the answer. The title of fellowship as opposed to society was a personal choice of Mr Cross, as he felt it to be most suited to admirers of a woman who still had a message for present and future generations. At about the same time, correspondence arose in the London Press about George Eliot's work and mention was made about the possibility of a George Eliot Society being formed. As a result letters began to arrive at the Nuneaton Chronicle from all over England from people eager for more information. Mr Cross needed no more encouragement, and a preliminary meeting was held in the Council Chamber in Nuneaton in October 1930. The idea of a Fellowship was accepted and Miss Elizabeth Haldane, a distinguished early biographer of George Eliot was elected as the first President. Plans were made for a dinner to be held on George Eliot's birthday at the Newdegate Arms. The principal guest was Mr J Lewis and it was he who proposed the toast to the Immortal Memory of George Eliot. A week after the dinner a notice appeared in the Nuneaton Chronicle about a meeting to elect officers. At the meeting, held on 15 January 1931 officers were elected, Mr Cross was to be Chairman, and members of the Council included Mr S Pratt, Mr J Benfell, Councillor G Taylor and Miss K Grant. Nowadays more than 80 years later the Fellowship continues to honour George Eliot and to promote interest in her life and works. It's a forum for those who admire her writing, and for those who wish to learn more and has over 500 members both in the UK and overseas.

The picture show how a London publication celebrated George Eliot in January 1881, just over a fortnight after her death on 21 December 1880. Fifty years later the George Eliot Fellowship was founded in Nuneaton, and we are now only four year away from celebrating the centenary of that event!

Today is George Eliot's birthday. She was born 206 years ago today at five in the morning at South Farm on the Arbury Estate, near Nuneaton, as her father Robert Evans, recorded in his work diary.
Robert Evans was the land agent to the Arbury Estate, owned by the Newdegate family. Today the agent to the estate still lives at South farm and he and his partner are guests of honour at the annual Birthday Lunch which is held on the nearest Sunday to 22 November. This year it will be tomorrow, 23 November. The Mayor and Mayoress of Nuneaton & Bedworth will also be present.
Happy birthday, Marian Evans/George Eliot.

Members of the Fellowship had a busy weekend. Last Friday, 5th September, our reading and study group which meets twice a year, was treated to a superb discussion and teaching by KarenA nn Herbert on King Lear (the group reads much more than just George Eliot!) Thanks to those who attended and made it such a valuable session.
Then on Saturday, 6th, we had a three hour session at Coton Heritage Centre on the subject of Sally Shilton, the Bedworth born girl who Eliot used as the model for Caterina in Mr Gilfil's Love Story. Local historian David Paterson set the historical background amid the complex family arrangements of the Newdigate family and then a scholar and musician from America, Vivian Montgomery, dealt with the sort of musicians who composed and played, and would have influenced Sally Shilton in the 18th century. She included superb recordings of such music in her presentation. After refreshments, we had 20 minutes of readings by Fellowship members of passages in Mr Gilfil and other novels that deal with music. George Eliot was an excellent musician and her books are suffused with references to it.
The picture shows Vivian and David posing with the statue in Nuneaton on Friday 5th during a tour, with John Burton, of the local George Eliot sights.

Today, in the heat, is our annual wreath laying event in the George Eliot Memorial Gardens in Nuneaton at 3pm. About a dozen wreaths will be laid by representatives from groups in the area with a George Eliot connection. The mayor, Councillor Bhim Saru will lay a wreath on behalf of the people of the Borough and local schools, civic societies and churches will all be represented. The guest of honour is Professor Vinod Patel, who uses Middlemarch as a text for his medical students to study and relate to modern medicine. All are welcome to attend and watch the proceedings. The picture shows the wreaths last year.
