Today morning, I went to the BBC CWR. To talk about the Road Safety Campaign in Stoke Aldermoor. My session comes in at 2:12:00 minutes into the radio show. This is a campaign that has been organised by the people of Stoke Aldermoor supported by Grapevine Coventry and Warwickshire Community organisers.

We have worked with local people on this since they identified it as their number one priority in October 2023. Over 300 people signed the petition that was handed over to the council and over 100 people were spoken to. People young, old and in between care about this and want action taken before a more serious incident occurs.

Below is a link to a video that local people both young and old made helped by Grapevine. They talk about their experiences and voice their concerns about safety on our roads. It finishes with a call to action for the council to put in sustainable road traffic measures soon. And for more local people to join in the campaign too.

It also shows the impact of dangerous driving on a road in Stoke Aldermoor.
Please use your discretion when watching as the immediate aftermath of the of a road traffic accident is shown.

Tune into BBC Coventry & Warwickshire tomorrow morning (14 January) at around 8:15am to hear an interview with our CEO Clare Wightman about proposed cuts to grant funding for voluntary sector services helping people with learning disabilities in Coventry who don't qualify for council support.

This will mean about half as much money for support like our Help and Connect project in the coming year.

Follow this link for FIVE THINGS YOU CAN DO to take action and show your solidarity with some of our city's most vulnerable people whose lives will become even harder than they are now if we don't stop these cuts: https://www.grapevinecovandwarks.org/grapevine-news/help-to-stop-council-cuts-for-people-with-learning-disabilities-in-coventry/

City Council wants to cut money for voluntary sector services that help people with a learning disability who do not qualify for council support.

At the moment, some of the councilโ€™s money pays for Help and Connect - a service provided by Grapevine to 80 people every year.

In the future there will be half as much money. That means people will have even less support than they do now.

If you care about people who get no council support getting help from organisations like Grapevine, please complete the public consultation survey before the deadline of 28 January.

If you are a relative or friend of someone who has been helped by the grant for Help and Connect you might also want to have your say. Things to think about:

๐Ÿ›‘ There are already lots of people with a learning disability in the city struggling to cope who do not qualify for council support
๐Ÿ›‘ Their carers are often struggling to cope too
๐Ÿ›‘ Cutting voluntary sector support to them will make their lives even harder
๐Ÿ›‘ Taking away the safety net does not save money. When people fall into crisis, canโ€™t cope, get financially exploited or abused, the council has to step in anyway and it costs even more money to do that
๐Ÿ›‘ People with a disability are protected under the Equality Act 2010 and special attention should be paid to the impact of council cuts on them.

Please pass this message on and complete the survey today before it is too late.

Add 'reference number 25' to specifically talk about proposed cuts to voluntary sector services for people with learning disabilities living in Coventry ๐Ÿ™

This weekโ€™s icy conditions naturally bring road safety to the forefront of our minds โ€“ but for residents and children going to school in one neighbourhood, itโ€™s just one more danger on an already perilous daily journey.

Itโ€™s also a timely issue as this week is ๐Ÿšธ

When our place based community organisers started talking to parents about what they would like to work together to change in Stoke Aldermoor, road safety was quickly identified as their main priority.

A campaign core team formed, made up of concerned parents of children attending the local primary school and an inspiring group of young people wanting to make things better for themselves and others.

After all, road safety affects everyone living in an area.

After speaking to over 100 people in Stoke Aldermoor, the team has opened an ePetition in order to put their demands - including a zebra crossing - to Coventry City Council.

SIGN OUR PETITION to support Road Safety in

https://edemocracy.coventry.gov.uk/mgEPetitionDisplay.aspx?id=544

"We the undersigned petition the Council to make considerations on better road safety in Stoke Aldermoor. After speaking to over 100 people in the area, we call upon the Council to consider the following road safety measures:
A Zebra Crossing on Pinley Fields

A safe designated place for parents and children to cross is needed.

Speed bumps on the Moorfield

Extra parking spaces nearby the school

Make Pinley Fields a one-way street with waiting restrictions. This would have to be done in conjunction with other measures. It would allow traffic from the school run to move off quicker, but this would not benefit the issues on the Moorfield.

Speed cameras / Fines

School markings/cones around the school to stop congestion.

Consider the area around Aldermoor Primary School for a Street Safe scheme

Employing a lollipop person at school drop-off and pick-up times

School involvement in providing more road traffic awareness training for parents and children. This could include outside organisations.

A pedestrian crossing on Acorn Street

More 20 mph Zones in Stoke Aldermoor

Conversations with teenage bikers - they do not race around at school times as they are aware of the children. They would re-route to avoid a zebra crossing.

This ePetition runs from 31/10/2024 to 19/12/2024."
