Cadent Foundation

Cadent Foundation Working with charities since 2019 to find sustainable solutions to fuel poverty. Cadent operates across some of the most disadvantaged areas in the country.

The Cadent Foundation was established as a Donor Advised fund in July 2019, funded from a share of the profits of Cadent Gas, the country’s largest gas distribution network. In fact, eight out of the top ten most deprived local authority districts in England are situated within Cadent’s network. This means that millions of people are facing daily struggles due to low income, inadequate housing and

barriers to accessing support services. As a utility company, Cadent is uniquely placed to see the real-life impact fuel poverty and low energy efficiency has on the people in our communities. The Cadent Foundation was set up to help play a part in addressing these inequalities. The Cadent Foundation has been working with charities and partners since 2019. Our aim is to help households find sustainable solutions to fuel poverty and ensure people are safe and warm in their homes. By working with charitable organisations we strive to help households improve their financial wellbeing and become more energy efficient through advice, support and practical measures. The Cadent Foundation is administered by Charities Trust (Charity Registration No: 327489) who we work with to manage the grant giving and ensure that all funds donated by the Foundation are only used to further charitable purposes for the public benefit.

πŸ«±πŸΌβ€πŸ«²πŸ½ Today we visited the 'Stay Warm in Willenhall' project in Coventry, where Groundwork Green Doctor Megan and Maddie were delivering an Energy Champion training session to key members of the community.

This 1-year project helps to mitigate the effects of fuel poverty for the most vulnerable, those who are socially excluded and financially struggling in Willenhall and surrounding wards.

Twenty Energy Champions are being trained to extend the work of the Green Doctor, reaching those who may be more hidden due to language barriers for example.

They are trained to:
βœ… Offer energy saving advice and information on energy tariffs
βœ… Support in accessing resources and making referrals to Groundwork
βœ… Assess residents needs and identifying relevant support, such as Warm home discount and cold weather payments
βœ… Network with other organisations to promote the Green Doctor service
βœ… Provide leaflets to the wider community

😰 Penny feared she would struggle to pay her bills and keep her house warm during the colder months after losing her husband, but the support of our partner Housing Plus Group (HPG) changed everything. She was left trying to navigate household bills and finances on her own for the first time, all while dealing with her grief.

πŸ’š At a drop in event, she was introduced to HPG’s Money Matters team from whom she received guidance around budgeting and financial wellbeing, whilst securing additional income entitlements which has made β€œan enormous difference” to her day-to-day life.

Through our partneship with HPG, Penny was also given personalised support to help her manage her energy costs, and provided with a warmth support pack, comprising of an electric blanket, hot water bottle and dehumidifier.

Penny said being put in touch with the Money Matters team was a turning point for her: "I finally feel like I can breathe again. I no longer feel anxious all the time and that’s done wonders for my mental health."

πŸ’š Our support begins with a Β£10,000 initial donation from the Cadent Foundation Community Fund.

Mandy Franklin, a Technical Support Administrator for Cadent said: β€œMy sister and I received grief counselling from St Helena after our parents passed, and the service that they offer is just brilliant. I’d supported them through a previous employer, so when the opportunity arose to do something at Cadent, I knew that they were a charity who would really benefit from our support and I’m glad my colleagues agreed!”

πŸ’š Personal support from the Energy Advice team
πŸ’š Guidance on reducing bills through tariffs and energy use insights
πŸ’š Low-cost energy-saving measures tailored to each household
πŸ’š Practical in-home advice to help residents make energy saving changes.

The energy MOTs are just one way the Money Matters team supports older residents, many of whom are on fixed incomes and can be particularly affected by rising living costs.

This week, we've been with the Citizens Advice Liverpool team, who explained the the work they are doing to support the local community in tackling fuel poverty 🀝

We met with the Cadent Foundation energy case worker, and had the opportunity to listen to a client call to understand the daily conversations around energy use, managing bills and maximising income.

It was inspiring to see first-hand how this funding is making a real impact in Liverpool πŸ’‘ Find out more about our work with Citizens Advice πŸ‘‰πŸ» https://orlo.uk/jD1e1
