It has come to our attention that the majority of African men are simply not aware of prostate cancer and do not take early urinary sympt
oms seriously, therefore 60–80% present end up with very advanced prostate cancer. Although much emphasis has been placed on cancer in women, especially breast and cervical cancer, little attention has been given to the cancers affecting men. Currently, there is no formal program targeting prostate cancer which may explain the lack of awareness about prostate cancer among the population.
“Prostate cancer is a silent killer disease and can only be cured when detected at an early stage, most men wait to fall very sick before they visit the health facility. Often they like to hide illnesses and turn up to the hospital at a very late stage when already in critical condition, and life cannot be saved. However, regular screening, early detection, and treatment increase survival rates.
