"Volunteering has given us a purpose, now I look forward to Tuesday and Thursday mornings because I’m getting up and doing something I’m thoroughly enjoying.”

This Volunteers’ Week, it’s time to celebrate all things volunteering!

For Neil and wife Nicole volunteering at their local ExtraCare village has become a meaningful and enjoyable part of retirement.

Here they discuss their roles, the friendships they've made and how they've become a valuable part of life at ExtraCare Shenley Wood Retirement Village.

"It was wonderful to see people of all generations come together to celebrate inclusion, community and individuality. Championing the message of ‘pride in every generation’ made the experience especially meaningful."

A huge thank you to everyone who braved the heat and joined our Pride Float at Birmingham Pride on Saturday! 🌈

From residents and colleagues to family members, it's wonderful to see people come together in support.

37 thrill-seekers swapped their typical Thursday evening for a barefoot Fire Walk this week, stepping across hot coals in ExtraCare's car park to raise vital funds for our charity!

Thanks to our wonderful fire walkers which included residents, staff, local volunteers and businesses we have raised £5500 so far to assist ExtraCare’s support services across our 18 retirement living locations. The efforts of our walkers have helped those in later life live with dignity, independence and improved wellbeing.

A huge thank you to all involved!

“The buyback scheme turned out to be a lifesaver for my family. If my parents hadn’t been in an ExtraCare apartment, we would have had to get an estate agent involved. We gave three months notice, emptied the apartment and shortly afterwards Mum had the buyback money in her account!"

With so much conversation around retirement living at the moment, it’s important to remember that not all retirement communities operate in the same way.

As a not-for-profit organisation ExtraCare have always believed in keeping things simple and transparent for residents and their families. That’s why, when a resident leaves one of our locations, we buy the property back at a pre-agreed price, meaning:

• No lengthy selling process
• No uncertainty around the housing market
• No estate agent fees or listings to manage

Find out more about our buy-back approach and a breakdown of the process here:

Unlike other developers, ExtraCare does things a little differently, particularly when it comes to retirement village exit fees.

A big thank you to our Fundraising Manager Mark Clements for helping arrange for volunteers from EA First to spend time at Earlsdon Park Village and Bournville Gardens Village last week.

The volunteers did a mix of painting and gardening, making fantastic contributions to our communities.

This partnership with EA First has already supported several other ExtraCare villages and we’re hoping to welcome the team back again later this year!
