This , we stand 🧡

At D6, we’re proud to be part of the North East’s arts and culture sector – shaped by the hard work, commitment and care of people who are dedicated to creating a more inclusive, welcoming place for those seeking sanctuary. 🧡

We know this work isn’t always easy, especially in challenging times. That’s why we want to recognise and celebrate the dedication and creativity shown by so many individuals and organisations across our region.

is a moment to come together – locally, regionally and nationally – to share stories, highlight this important work, and continue building a culture of welcome in our communities.

We'll be at Newcastle City Council and City of Sanctuary's Forum on Thursday.

Our Lead Producer, Andrea Carter, will introduce D6’s new programme Assemble Europe, an arts programme exploring the climate emergency at the intersection of involuntary migration, displacement and conflict, with a focus on building resilient cultural ecologies in times of crisis.

We’ll be joined by Scotswood Natural Community Garden and New Writing North, who will share their important sanctuary-focused projects. The programme also includes workshops from New Writing North, GemArts , Asylum Matters and North East Museums – creating space to learn, reflect, and be inspired together.

Advocating for human rights and working in partnership is essential to creating meaningful, lasting change. We’re proud to be a Visual Arts Organisation of Sanctuary in Newcastle - a City of Sanctuary.

We're joining an international discussion on the climate emergency, displacement, care and creative practice to mark the launch of Assemble Europe, joining D6:EU in Cyprus for workshops and a public event.

How do we build cultural ecologies in response to oppression, erasure and displacement? What role can artists, curators, cultural organisations and communities play in fostering infrastructures of care and solidarity in times of crisis?

These questions underpin ASSEMBLE: In Conversation, taking place this Friday 12 June, 18:00–20:00 at St Lazarus, Larnaka, Cyprus.

Organised by D6:EU in collaboration with Larnaka 2030 - European Capital of Culture, the event introduces ASSEMBLE, a cultural project examining the climate emergency at the intersection of involuntary migration, conflict and ecological decline, with a focus on mobility and the right to move.

Guest speakers Julie Trébault from ARC - Artists at Risk Connection and Alix Pornon from Cité internationale des arts will join the discussion, exploring how cultural ecologies can be built and sustained in response to conditions of crisis and displacement.

We'll consider how cultural ecosystems are created and sustained in contexts marked by uncertainty, conflict and environmental change, and how creative practice can contribute to collective resilience and social transformation.

For our friends in Cyprus, you can register here:

ASSEMBLE is led by by D6:EU (Cyprus), partners include Congress of Сultural Activists / Конгрес Активістів Культури (Ukraine), Artists (Spain) and the international mobility network , and associate partners: D6: Culture in Transit (UK), ARC – Artists at Risk Connection (France) and Larnaka2030 (Cyprus). ASSEMBLE is a Creative Europe programme funded by the European Union, and in the UK, it is supported by the Arts Council England.

Powerful stories. Shared experiences.

We were proud to be part of The Late Shows, celebrating incredible art, collaboration and cultural heritage across the North East.

Huge thanks to Ziza, Paul Nataraj and Elisabeth Efua Sutherland. Rooted in the North East, their art brings forward powerful and often overlooked stories, connecting them to wider global histories shaped by colonialism.

Developed through Contested Desires residencies in Newcastle, Amsterdam, Budapest, Lisbon, Turin and Santiago, it was a real joy to share the work with our Late Shows audience.

Thank you to everyone who came by, and to all those who made it possible.

More about the artwork in the images…

✨Ziza’s durational performance reimagined maps and found objects to reveal colonial traces and hidden hierarchies, animating ceramic forms alongside domestic figurines and collectables.

✨Paul presented sound installations shaped by collaborative listening with communities in South Shields and Budapest, and collective responses to colonial voyages rooted in the collections at Lisbon’s Museu Nacional de História Natural e da Ciência.

✨Elisabeth’s films shared expanding research into Black and African lives in Newcastle, through retracing historical sites and interviews with Beverley Prevatt-Goldstein and Pat Poinen - founders of NEEACA and African Lives in Northern England.

We warmly thank the artists taking part. Contested Desires is co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union. In the UK, we are grateful for the support of Arts Council England, The National Lottery Heritage Fund and Community Foundation North East and Newcastle City Councils Newcastle Culture Investment Fund.
