We've been notified that the long-running scheme to place steel protection beams immediately adjacent to the rail bridge across the A237 should finally be brought to a conclusion by the end of August, after three earlier, aborted, attempts. A series of road closures, some just part, others completely blocking off the road that runs past Coulsdon South railway station, will commence this Thursday evening at 21.30. Please see the attached document for full closure details. We're hopeful that finally we can see an end to this project, which started way back in September 2025, and has clearly not run to plan. The new end date is given as 21 August, almost a year after it started.

Well, the third time was not the charm. Forget the railway bridge works for this weekend, it's not happening. No news as to when it might actually happen. We're sort of waiting for the truck carrying the steelwork to collide with the bridge now...

Having failed to get the work done on two previous attempts, we have been informed that the A237 running in front of Coulsdon South Station will be closed a number of times between the 27 April and the 1 May to facilitate the final installation of the safety/protection beams for the railway bridge. See the attached notes for further details. Fingers crossed it actually happens this time.

Qilates is inspired by Qigong and Pilates flow, incorporating gentle tapping of the body to help release blockages and support the flow of internal energy. You’ll move through all planes of motion, engaging the core while creating space and alignment in the body, while also taking time to breathe deeply and calm the nervous system.

For those who help support this very worthy organisation, please note that they are making some changes to the way they work.

Changes to Purley Food Hub’s way of working are to come into effect this week.
Starting on Wednesday 4th March, clients will come to Purley United Reformed Church to collect their food parcels, and the home deliveries system, introduced in response to Covid in 2020, is ending.
We will also switch to providing food to clients one day a week on Wednesday mornings and no longer on Saturdays.
The changes coincide with a reorganisation of the facilities at the church where our volunteers sort and store donated items and prepare clients' food parcels.
Full details are on our website at purleyfoodhub.net/

Last September and October, we experienced some difficulties in travelling using Coulsdon South railway station, and the Brighton Road (A237) that passes in front of it. As a result of a significant number of bridge strikes (where tall vehicles hit a bridge, usually as a result of the driver not knowing, or incorrectly understanding the height of their own vehicle) Network Rail were installing new steel protection beams which would help to protect the railway bridge that crosses the Brighton Road (A237), improving passenger safety and preventing future delays to services on the Brighton to London Main Line. It was a major operation and should have taken around six weeks to complete. Only they didn't finish the job. The steel beams weren't ready, so we ended up with some odd bits of metalwork on the bridge supports and nothing else. Well, they're coming back to finish the job at last. Engineers are expected to install the protection beams overnight on 27/28 March and 3/4 April 2026. During the overnight works the station will remain open but the entrance to the car park will be closed and you should expect road closures overnight too. Fingers crossed they have all the parts this time.
