The No To Hassockfield Campaign

The No To Hassockfield Campaign A cross-party and cross-community campaign against the opening of Hassockfield Immigration Removal Centre at Medomsley Edge focussed on Human Rights WHO ARE WE?

A group of people passionate about Immigration/Asylum Detention and stopping Hassockfield Immigration Removal Centre. A cross-party campaign including Labour & Lib Dem activists and a range of people active in their communities working together on the campaign. We have public Zoom Meetings and Workshops. Meetings of our Core Group occur between these for planning and admin purposes; this group inc

ludes a group of active campaigners and also a representative from Detention Forum. Other organisations we are linked with include Oxford Against Detention (formerly the Close Campsfield campaign), Detention Forum, Yarls Wood Campaigners, Duncan Lewis Solicitors, Women for Refugee Women, AVID, Women’s Aid, Migrant & Justice Forum, North East Against Racism, West End Refugee Service (WERS), Mental Health North East (MHNE), End Deportations Belfast, Abolish Detention among others. WHERE IS HASSOCKFIELD?

13 miles NW of Durham, 1.7 miles North of Consett. On the site of Medomsley Detention Centre, notorious for the abuse of young in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s as uncovered in Operation Seabrook – an investigation begun in 2013. WHO IS IN FAVOUR ? Conservative MP for North West Durham, Richard Holden is backing it; suggesting that it will create 150 jobs (something later revised upwards to 200) and will bring £10m into the local economy. His description of those to be detained is not a form of language we would use. Some local people. WESTMINSTER PARLIAMENT

A number of Parliamentary Questions have been asked and are planned, in both Houses & cross-party. A question was asked of Priti Patel at the Home Affairs Select Committee. We have support from a number of Labour and Lib Dem Peers & MPs, with other parties offering support on Social Media (eg the SNP). Alf Dubs spoke to one of our early public meeting, encouraging and inspiring us. Alf is also co-ordinating a group of anti-detention groups across the UK and Northern Ireland, including ourselves, to ensure ease of information sharing between all of these groups. WHAT IS PLANNED? An Immigration Removal Centre for c.88 women, similar to a Category 3 Prison is planned by the Home Office. These will be women who have served a prison sentence of more than 12 months, or who have broken immigration laws, or their asylum claim has failed. In 2019 over half – 61% – of the people held in immigration detention centres eventually gained their freedom to live in and contribute to the community. The figure for 2020 was 74%, and for women in 2018 it was 86%. So for most people detained, the Home Office’s decision to detain is successfully challenged. Immigration detention serves no acceptable purpose.

Saturday 21st March

On Sunday 1st March we held an informal gathering of members to share thoughts about our campaigning to date and about how we move forward. Our overwhelming sense is that Derwentside IRC is unlikely to close anytime soon. We considered the need for us to develop a longer term strategy for our campaign, with particular reference to the next general election. If you have the time and the skills to help us develop our strategy please email [email protected].

Today, we stood outside Derwentside IRC with the truth in our hands, and we made sure it crossed the fence.

Following the publication of the HM Inspectorate of Prisons report, we printed lots of copies of the BBC article and made sure it could not be ignored. Copies were flown over the fence and taped to windows. From outside, we could see staff reading, some appearing to see the article for the first time.

We read directly from the HMIP report right outside the entrance.

We read out HMIP’s own words describing what is happening inside this centre:

📌 HMIP found that staff had witnessed colleagues behaving inappropriately towards detainees, with eight members of staff dismissed in the previous year for unprofessional conduct.

📌 HMIP also found that every woman taken to hospital in 2025 had been handcuffed - without adequate justification - due to restrictive Home Office guidance that allowed almost no exceptions. At the previous inspection, no women had been handcuffed to hospital appointments, and there had been no adverse outcomes.

These are not campaign claims. They are the findings of an independent inspectorate.

Today was about visibility and accountability. About refusing to let these findings sit quietly in a report while women continue to be detained behind these walls. About making sure the people working inside could not say they didn’t know.

The report confirms what women with lived experience, campaigners and communities have been saying for years: this system causes harm, ignores vulnerability and detains women who should never be here at all.

We will keep showing up.
We will keep speaking the truth out loud.
We will keep demanding change.

Derwentside is not fit for purpose. Proven community-based alternatives exist. This place does not need to exist, and it must close.

Thank you to everyone who came, stood, read, listened and acted in solidarity today. The fight continues. ✊

This week HMIP published a report on their unannounced inspection of Derwentside IRC. Their report details that 59% of the women imprisoned were released on bail, meaning they should not have been imprisoned, without time limit, in the first place. Of the women the inspectors spoke to only 17% had recieved visits from relatives and friends.

These offical figures prove what No To Hassockfield has said all along, Derwentside IRC is cruel, isolating and unneccesary.

If you want the women in Derwentside to know they are not forgotten join us next Saturday 17th January 12 - 2pm. We will raise our voices, we will stand together with the women imprisoned within the centre.

Almost two thirds of detainees at a women-only immigration removal centre ended up being released, according to prison inspectors.

HM Inspectorate of Prisons (HMIP) said of the 723 women who left Derwentside Immigration Removal Centre (IRC) in Consett, County Durham, during a six-month period in 2025, 59% had been let go and 41% sent to other centres.

Dr Helen Groom, from the No To Hassockfield campaign group which seeks the closure of Derwentside, said the figures proved many of detainees were being held unnecessarily.

The Home Office said almost 50,000 illegal migrants had been removed or deported from British soil under this government.

The Derwentside centre is used to hold women subject to immigration control, with the average stay being 25 days and the longest 162 days, HMIP said.

Groom said it was not clear how many of those moved to other centres also ended up remaining in the UK.

"The government's own inspectorate report shows that [Derwentside] is not an immigration removal centre," she said.

She questioned why so many women were being locked up in this way, adding: "It's cruel, unnecessary and expensive."

'Further isolates women'
HMIP inspected the site between September and October 2025, at which time there were 55 women being held there. It also said the largest nationality groups held at the site were Chinese, Brazilian and Polish.

Over the past 12 months, five women were homeless when they left the site, including a woman who had previously been sectioned under the Mental Health Act, inspectors found.

HMIP said the site held "multidisciplinary meetings" on the day of release of each woman but they "gave little consideration to individual risks".

Another issue highlighted was the removal centre not doing enough to "encourage and support family contact".

It said only 17% of the women it surveyed had been visited by friends or family while being held at Derwentside IRC.

But Groom said the numbers highlighted how remote the site was and the distance the women were from their homes.

"[People's] family and friends will not have lots of money and therefore the ability to travel to Derwentside," she said, adding: "It further isolates women and increases the deterioration in their personal, physical and mental health."

'Shortest detention necessary'
HMIP said living conditions at the site were "very good", staff were "dedicated" and, while there remained areas for improvement, all those involved should be "commended for their hard work".

But there were also "concerns", inspectors said, including:

There being not enough female staff to cover duties where detainees needed supervision and support from a woman

Many detainees were still being transported overnight and had long journeys to the centre

Too much of the food on offer was bland and unappetising, and portion sizes varied significantly

Complaint responses took too long and were not translated

Today marks 4 years of imprisonment at Derwentside IRC. We are here now, blocking the entrance, to mark this awful date.
