Incident 61 of 2026:

It was a sunny dry afternoon when NWAS (North West Ambulance Service) asked us to go to the assistance of a gentleman who had slipped on mud and injured his ankle whilst descending Latterbarrow.

Three vehicles were deployed and parked at the roadside before team members then made their way to the top of the fell. On arrival at the scene, the casualty was assessed and pain relief given. His leg was splinted and then he was stretchered down to the Land Rovers. He and his wife were then driven to their holiday accommodation from where family would take him to hospital.

Incident 60 of 2026:
03/10/26, 14:13, Coniston Old Man SD272978

The afternoon was fine with sunny intervals, but chilly when the sun went in.
We had only just sent a Land Rover off with a crew to help our neighbouring Team – Langdale Ambleside MRT with a second job that they were dealing with (our Incident 59) when Cumbria Police (Cumpol) tasked us with our own call out. They contacted us regarding a gentleman who had been taken ill at the summit of Coniston Old Man while out with a walking group.

The Duty Leader called the remaining available Team members out and due to low numbers available, contacted our neighbouring Team Duddon & Furness MRT (DFMRT) who offered to send members to help. At the same time, we requested assistance from North West Air Ambulance (NWAA) as the casualty was close to a convenient landing zone.

We despatched 2 vehicles to Bursting Stone Quarry and walked up from there with our colleagues from DFMRT following on.
The casualty was assessed by NWAA medics and was assisted to the helicopter by members of his party prior to the team arriving on scene. He was then flown to Furness General Hospital for further assessment.

12 members from Coniston Team plus at least 8 from DFMRT attended for 2 hours 47 minutes. Thank you very much DFMRT & NWAA for your help!

Incident 59 of 2026:
03/10/26, 13:50, Wansfell, NY392042

It was a pleasant sunny autumn afternoon when Langdale and Ambleside MRT (LAMRT) asked if we would assist them with a casualty on Wansfell, as most members of their team were already dealing with an earlier incident.

We despatched one Land Rover to Stock Ghyll above Ambleside and walked up with a piece of LAMRT’s equipment from there. We stretchered the casualty, who had an ankle injury, off the fell to the family car waiting on the roadside for his onward journey to hospital.

6 members attended this incident which took 2hrs 40mins.

Incident 58 of 2026:
29/09/26, 17:29, Stang End, NY319028

It was a cloudy but dry late afternoon when Cumbria Police asked us to go to the assistance of a lady who had come off her e-bike when it had a technical fault.

She had injured her shoulder and was in a lot of pain. Only one vehicle was deployed as no stretcher carry was needed and we were able to drive straight to her location. The lady had been helped by someone who lived very close to where the accident happened. Once assessed, the casualty was given pain relief and driven to the rescue base to await the arrival of an ambulance. She was taken to Furness General Hospital.

Thank you to the homeowner who looked after this lady and her husband whilst waiting for us to arrive.

15 members responded to this incident which took 2hrs 17mins.

Leadership. Teamwork. Confidence.

Each year, we’re pleased to welcome a group of young adults to our Team Rescue Base, giving them the opportunity to develop their leadership and teamwork skills while building confidence along the way.

This September, we welcomed 11 students from a variety of backgrounds. During their visit, they discovered how our Team was formed, what we do, how we manage a call-out, and, most importantly, got hands-on with some of our rescue equipment:
📻 Using our radios
🦵 Applying a leg splint
🚑 Assembling and carrying a stretcher

On the second day of their visit, they were given a rescue scenario with no advance warning of what the day would bring. Working together, they had to plan and execute a rescue while members of Coniston MRT provided encouragement.

Even the mist and drizzle couldn't dampen their enthusiasm! 🌧️

We saw their self-confidence grow as they tackled each challenge and supported one another.

It’s always fantastic to see young people develop their skills in the outdoors - and we’re proud to play a small part in that journey.

Incident 57 of 2026:
26/09/26, 14:15, Coniston/Honister

It was a pleasant early autumn afternoon when we received a call out from NWAS (North West Ambulance Service).

A gentleman had been on a long walk and was not feeling well. NWAS, who had been informed of this by his wife, could not locate him and therefore asked us for assistance. As contact could not be made, several avenues were explored and eventually it was confirmed that he was safe and well at Honister Slate Mine. Poor signal in that area did not help.

9 team members attended this incident which lasted 1hr 35mins

Incident 56 of 2026:
23/09/26, 13:53, Coniston Old Man, SD271979

It was a clear, sunny and breezy afternoon when Cumbria Police asked us to go to the assistance of a gentleman who had slipped and hurt his knee whilst starting to descend from the summit of Coniston Old Man.

Due to the location and low member availability, we asked for air support as well as contacting our neighbouring team Duddon & Furness MRT to see if they could also assist in case we couldn’t get a helicopter. Two vehicles were deployed.

On arrival, the casualty was assessed and his leg splinted. Helimed 08 was able to attend and land on the ridge. We stretchered the gentleman the short distance to the helicopter which flew him to Furness General Hospital. Thank you for your help.

7 members from Coniston and 10 from DFMRT responded to this incident. Our thanks to them as well. The incident took 3hrs 32mins.

A special book featuring Coniston MRT! ⛰️📚

We’re delighted to have been working with children’s author Rachel Loader, whose “Where Are You Going Today?” series explores different vehicles, what they do and the stories behind them.

Her latest book features a Coniston MRT 4x4, inspired by her family’s love of the Coniston area.

Aimed at children aged 2-6, it’s educational and great fun, with beautiful illustrations by Richard O’Neil.

Even better, 25% of every book sold comes back to Coniston MRT, helping support our work on the fells.

At £15.99, we think it would make a lovely Christmas present for any little adventure enthusiast!

Incident 55 of 2026:
12/09/26, 12:46, Skelwith Bridge, NY341034

The afternoon was mild and cloudy with some drizzle. The Team Leader of Langdale and Ambleside MRT (LAMRT) asked if we would assist with a rescue, which initially looked as though it could be in Coniston’s area.

A walker had badly injured her ankle and needed urgent care. As LAMRT were already deploying, we were then asked to stand by until further information was collected. However, we were then stood down as it was within LAMRT’s boundary and there was plenty of help to hand.

9 team members were available for this incident for 30 minutes.
