We are the Rotary Club of Comber - a happy, busy club, mixing interesting projects with entertaining outings. Phone or message for meeting details.

We meet on 1st and 3rd Mondays every month at 6pm in McBride's on the Square, Comber and also via Zoom. As one of the most active clubs in Ireland, we're known to punch above our weight. We focus on projects to help young people of all ages in our community, running competitions for young musicians, photographers, cooks and writers. We support school groups interested in environmental projects. Local secondary school leavers depend on us to give them practice in job interviews. We've run health education projects in primary schools, helped to integrate new arrivals in our community and arranged fund-raising events for local charities. We're always on the look out for practicalities to help those in need at home and overseas.

For 40 years, Comber Rotary has been quietly making a difference in our local community, and we're proud of the projects and initiatives our members have helped bring to life!

From supporting young people through our Young Musician, Young Writer and leadership competitions, to helping schools prepare pupils for the world of work through mock interviews, our work is incredibly varied.

We also support important road safety initiatives, local community projects and fundraising for charities and causes close to our hearts.

And behind it all? A group of people who enjoy getting together, sharing ideas and making things happen!

With World Polio Day coming up this Saturday, 24 October, we're using our weekly Throwback Thursday to look back at one of Rotary's biggest and most important global missions.

Did you know Rotary has led the fight to eradicate polio for over 40 years?

Back in 1985, Rotary launched its PolioPlus programme, beginning an extraordinary global effort to protect children from this devastating disease.

At the time, polio was paralysing hundreds of thousands of children worldwide every year.

Fast forward to today, and thanks to decades of vaccination campaigns, fundraising and international cooperation, wild polio cases have fallen by more than 99% since 1988!

It's an incredible achievement, but the work isn't finished yet.

World Polio Day is an important reminder of just how far we've come, and why we must keep going until polio is eradicated for good.

Here at Comber Rotary, we're proud to play our part in this worldwide effort. On 18 November, we'll be continuing our support for the End Polio Now campaign with a fundraising Race Night.

It's a wonderful reminder that even a small local Rotary club can contribute to something truly extraordinary on a global scale.

A big thank you to everyone who joined us at Comber Leisure Centre last Friday for our Fire Safety Evening, held in partnership with the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS).

It was a fantastic opportunity for local community members to meet the firefighters from Comber Fire Station, get potentially lifesaving advice, and learn more about keeping themselves and their families safe at home.

The evening included an informative presentation, followed by a chance to ask questions and learn more about the FREE Home Fire Safety Visits offered by NIFRS.

These visits help households identify potential fire risks, check smoke alarm coverage and, where eligible, have additional alarms supplied and fitted free of charge.

A special thank you to the team at Comber Fire Station for giving up their time, sharing their expertise and making the evening so informative and welcoming.

Events like this are a great example of how working together can make a positive difference in our local community.

FIRE SAFETY EVENING | FRIDAY 16TH OCTOBER

Comber Rotary is delighted to help spread the word about an upcoming Fire Safety Evening with the Northern Ireland Fire & Rescue Service (NIFRS).

Join your local firefighters for an informal, informative evening with practical advice to help keep you and your family safe.

🕡 6.30pm – approximately 7.30pm

📍 Comber Leisure Centre

What can you expect?

A short presentation from local firefighters covering essential fire safety advice, particularly around keeping your home safe.

An opportunity to ask questions and get advice directly from your local fire crews.

Information about FREE Home Fire Safety Visits, including smoke alarm checks and the installation of additional alarms where eligible.

A chance to meet your local firefighters over a cuppa and a biscuit!

A great opportunity to get potentially lifesaving advice, learn about the support available, and meet the people helping keep our communities safe.

Everyone is welcome, and we'd love to see you there!

A little handiwork makes a big difference for local wildlife!

Did you know Comber Rotary members meet every Monday morning to put their practical skills to good use by building nesting boxes for barn owls and feeder boxes for red squirrels?

It's just one of the many ways our members help protect and support Northern Ireland's wonderful wildlife.

Recently, members were delighted to deliver five handmade barn owl nesting boxes to Ulster Wildlife, supporting their important conservation work.

But the project isn't just about building boxes!

Our members also visit local schools and youth groups, giving young people the opportunity to get involved, learn more about wildlife conservation and discover how even small actions can make a real difference to the natural world around us.

It's a fantastic example of what Rotary is all about: bringing people together, sharing skills and making a positive contribution to our community and environment.

From the workshop to the wild, Comber Rotary is proud to help protect our local wildlife!

What does Comber Rotary actually do? It's a question we're always happy to answer, because there's probably more happening behind the scenes than you might think!

For 40 years, Comber Rotary has been bringing local people together to make a positive difference, both here in our community and further afield.

From organising the Northern Ireland Young Musician Competition and supporting young sailors, to helping local school pupils prepare for job interviews, we're passionate about giving young people opportunities to build confidence and develop their talents.

We've also been involved in some fantastic community initiatives over the years, including our CODAC caravans, which helped bring important health services closer to local communities, and Just One Life, a road safety initiative delivered in partnership with emergency services to educate young people.

Alongside this, we support local charities, raise funds for worthwhile causes and contribute to international projects, including ShelterBox.

But Rotary isn't just about fundraising and volunteering. It's about friendship too!

Our members come from all walks of life, bringing different skills, experiences and ideas to the table. We enjoy getting together, having a laugh and doing something worthwhile.

Some of our projects are big. Others are small acts of kindness that make a real difference. And we're equally proud of both.

40 years on, Comber Rotary still brings local people together to make good things happen.

Being a Friend of Rotary means you can get involved in the things that matter to you, whenever you have the time.

THROWBACK THURSDAY | A little confidence goes a long way

Over the past 40 years, Comber Rotary has supported young people in all sorts of ways, and one of our longstanding projects is helping local pupils prepare for their first job interviews.

Through our school mock interview programme, Rotary members share their own professional experience, giving pupils the chance to practise their interview skills, build confidence and receive some helpful feedback.

For some, it's their very first experience of sitting across from an interviewer!

It's a simple idea, but one that can make a real difference as young people take their next steps.

Just one of the many ways Comber Rotary has been supporting our local community for four decades.

Think Rotary probably isn't for you? You might be surprised.

There are quite a few misconceptions about Rotary and who can get involved.

At the end of the day, we're looking for people who want to meet others, get involved in their community and use whatever time, ideas or skills they can offer to help make a difference.

As our Vice President Judy puts it:

“We're kind, we're friendly, we do good work, we get involved.”

If that sounds like something you'd like to be part of, we'd love to hear from you.
