Our volunteer speaker Peter Hughes has delivered talks to groups across North Wales and North Powys, sharing inspiring stories and highlighting the vital support that Marie Curie provides to local families facing terminal illness.

Peter is a highly experienced speaker and passionate Marie Curie supporter. He is currently a member of the Menai Fundraising Group and was a valued member of the Conwy Fundraising Group for many years before relocating to Anglesey.

His free talks offer a fascinating insight into Marie Curie's work locally and the difference our nurses and services make to people living with a terminal illness and those close to them.

The Rotary Club of Flint & Holywell were out in force, resplendent in tabards and funny hats, raising money for Marie Curie Nurses last weekend. This time, the Rotarians were standing outside Tesco's Holywell Store.
Club President David Prothero commented that the Holywell Store may be one of Tesco's smaller stores in this area, but their customers were certainly amongst the most generous with just under £1,000 raised over the weekend. David stated that throughout the year The Rotary Club were out raising money to support numerous local charities and needy causes, however there is rarely difficulty in collecting money for The Marie Curie Nurses. In many cases, the silence of folding bank notes replaces the chinks of coins as people who have experienced the care and devotion Marie Curie nurses gave their family and friends in their time of need, tell us of their experiences.
Paul Islip, Secretary of the Rotary Club seen on the left of the photo, reported to members that The Flintshire/North Wales Volunteers Branch had only recently announced that their fund raising efforts had only recently broken the £1/2m barrier, - a rare achievement indeed.
The Flint and Holywell Rotary Club have been regular supporters of the nurses for many years and in addition to Holywell, they had also been out collecting at the large Tesco Superstore in Broughton a couple of weeks ago.

Ruth Gilford, our North Wales Volunteer Services Officer, recently met with Rhun ap Iorwerth, First Minister of Wales and Helen Jenner, Leader of Reform UK Wales, at Ysbyty Gwynedd.

The meeting provided an opportunity to talk about the important work of the Marie Curie Hospital Companion Service and the Integrated Discharge Team, highlighting how we work together to support patients and help ensure they receive the care, companionship and support they need.

Our Hospital Companion Service offers a friendly face, a listening ear and a hand to hold for patients who may otherwise be alone during their hospital stay, making a real difference when it matters most.

We are incredibly proud of the difference our volunteers make and of the partnerships helping us reach more people across North Wales.

A huge congratulations to the Llanfairfechan & Penmaenmawr Inner Wheel Club on raising an incredible £547.68, with the total exceeding £600 once Gift Aid is added.

From a single sponsored walk and tombola, this is a fantastic achievement and a real testament to the enthusiasm, generosity and hard work of everyone involved. It was also a pleasure to be invited to your recent meeting for the cheque presentation, where I had the opportunity to meet more of the club's members and learn more about the wonderful work you do in your local community.

Thank you, too, for inviting our fantastic Marie Curie Speaker, Peter Hughes, to speak at the meeting. I'm delighted to hear his talk was so well received.

"Mum was diagnosed with a progressive terminal lung disease in 2021. She required 24/7 oxygen machines and as the disease progressed it became very difficult for her and she had no quality of life. In the end she was bed bound at home and couldn't do anything for herself. When she took a bad turn in August last year, she needed carers and overnight care. This is when Marie Curie became involved.

It made all the difference. Every single Marie Curie staff member was fantastic. The Health Care Assistant would come round at about 10pm and usually stay until 7am in the morning. It meant that Dad was able to get a good night's sleep and take over again in the morning feeling refreshed. Gail and Boggi were the Marie Curie staff that came the most and were wonderful. Mum really loved them and I noticed she was far less anxious when Marie Curie was here. They were caring and compassionate. We would have struggled hugely without them. I don't like to imagine how it would have been otherwise.

Gail was really brilliant the night Mum passed and spoke to me in a calm manner. She explained what might happen when Mum died. She made sure to tell me the signs to look out for when the end was near, for example the change in Mum's breathing. She provided care for my mum, constantly checking on her and changing her if she needed to. She was there for me and my Dad the moment Mum passed away and made the appropriate phone calls to the out of hours nurses. 💛 Care for the Future – Soughton Hall, Mold 💛

Yesterday, we held our annual Care for the Future event at Soughton Hall in Mold, and it was lovely to see so many familiar faces and welcome new people along!

The event is a wonderful opportunity to raise awareness of the importance of writing a Will and leaving a gift in your Will to Marie Curie. These gifts can make a lasting difference, helping us continue to provide vital care and support to people living with a terminal illness and their families.

It was lovely to chat with everyone, answer questions, share information and help people understand how leaving a gift in their Will, whatever the size, can help Marie Curie be there for future generations.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along and to all those who continue to support Marie Curie. 💛

Together, we can help make sure no one has to face death, dying or bereavement alone.

I had the pleasure of visiting Bridlewood Equestrian Centre yesterday to receive a fantastic cheque for £1,529 raised for Marie Curie Cymru following their Western-themed Charity Fun Day back in August.

What a wonderful place, filled with lovely, down-to-earth people who have worked incredibly hard to raise money for such an important cause.

A huge thank you to Jackie, Jane, Romaine and everyone involved, along with all those who attended and supported the event.

It was great to have a tour of the yard, meet so many of the animals, and of course spend some time with the stars of this photo: Scruffy, Lady and Appy! 🐴💛

Bridlewood is a fantastic livery yard with a real community spirit, and it was clear to see how much dedication and care goes into everything they do. We're so grateful that they chose to support Marie Curie.

I'm also delighted to hear that the Charity Fun Day may become an annual event. After such a brilliant success this year, I'm already looking forward to next year's hoedown! 🤠
