Sea2it was pleased to deliver a pilot training workshop today to train anglers in the appropriate handling, recording and monitoring of critically endangered common skate, with the aim of assisting anglers to obtain a marine wildlife licence under the Wildlife Order (1985) NI to catch and release common skate for the purpose of recording data about this special species, and where possible (and appropriate) deploying floy tags to enhance learning about their distribution and behaviours.

Data collected by anglers will contribute to management policies and decisions by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs to better conserve and enhance these protected animals.

Several volunteers have been out on the River Roe and the River Bann this weekend recording water samples for Earthwatch’s FreshWater Watch.

This year we are sampling 4 locations every month on each the Roe and the Bann. The results feed into a global survey of water quality issues and can help identify water quality issues for further investigation by the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.

An oil tank!

A huge effort from our volunteers this weekend for the final two cleanups supported by DAERA’s Water Quality Improvement Programme 25/26.

From Coleraine Town Centre to the Barmouth, volunteers from The Irish Society's Primary School and Nursery, Coleraine Grammar School, Dalriada School and Royal Belfast Academical Institution helped remove litter from the River Bann, recording what might be a new record of 66 plastic bottles in one square metre of riverbank and also recovering a large oil tank notified to us by a member of the public 🤯.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers who contribute their time so generously to help with the cleanups and tackle the legacy of plastic pollution on our beautiful river.

💩 The weird and wonderful at Balls Point on the River Roe today.

Everything from a turd cushion to a tube of picnic size Colman’s Mustard with imperial measurements, and a miniature dinosaur phone cover.

Can anyone help us date the mustard tube?

EGG hunt...

wee bit early for an Easter Egg hunt we know, but if your out on your walks on local shoreline over next few months please keep egg out for large 'Mermaids purses' egg cases. specifically we're looking for data on the very large ones about the size of your hand.

The reason we're looking for this is to have data evidence on breeding sites for our critically endangered species of Flapper Skate.
