Celebrating another one of our wonderful volunteer organisations. 🙌🏻

The Rotary Club of the Royal Forest of Dean is a group of dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers who actively contribute their time and skills to support their local community. Guided by the Rotary principle of “Service Above Self,” members are committed to making a positive impact both locally and beyond. As part of the wider global Rotary network, the club is connected to a worldwide community focused on humanitarian service and community development.

A central part of the club’s fundraising efforts is the Forest of Dean Trails Half Marathon, an event they organise twice each year. Hosted at Speech House Field, the marathon attracts participants from across the region and beyond. Largely run by volunteers, the event has become a well-established and successful initiative, generating vital funds that enable the club to provide meaningful support to local charities. In addition to these regular activities, the club also responds to urgent situations, offering assistance during natural and manmade disasters when needed.

Over the years, the Rotary Club of the Royal Forest of Dean has contributed to a number of significant projects within the community. These include support for The Victoria Centre in Lydney, the Dean Heritage Centre, Great Oaks Hospice, and the Dark Hill project near Coleford, all reflecting the club’s ongoing commitment to improving local facilities and services.

We have been celebrating our volunteer groups this week and today I want to share a wonderful write up by Ruth Smith of the Gloucs Guides and Rangers.

Guides & Rangers: More Than Just Crafts!
Guides and Rangers in Gloucestershire have an actionpacked year ahead, filled with challenge, adventure, and opportunities that stretch far beyond the craft table.
Four of our Rangers have been selected to represent Gloucestershire on an international trip to Switzerland — an incredible achievement and a chance to take part in global Guiding. Each Ranger is working hard to raise £2030 to make the trip possible, and their fundraising efforts are already well underway.
We’re also committed to making a difference closer to home. This year we’re proudly supporting The Hedgehog Trust, helping protect one of Britain’s most loved (and most endangered) wild animals. As part of our efforts, we’ll be taking on a sponsored walk, combining community action with teamwork and determination.
Community spirit has been a big theme for us recently. We’ve taken part in a litterpick/chip walk, tidying up our local area before rewarding ourselves with wellearned chips — the perfect mix of service and fun.
Our celebrations have already taken us around the world — quite literally. For Thinking Day, we joined the district for a globalthemed adventure, exploring cultures, traditions, and the spirit of international friendship. Our Guides shone as they supported the younger Rainbows throughout the event, showing leadership, kindness, and the true heart of Guiding.
And because adventure is at the core of what we do, we’ve packed the calendar with unforgettable experiences, including:
• 🏉 Watching the Six Nations Women’s Rugby, celebrating strength, skill, and women in sport
• 😄 A sleepover at AirHop, full of bouncing, bonding, and big laughs
• 🌍 Opportunities to grow confidence, leadership, and independence through realworld challenges
Guides and Rangers is a place where young people discover what they’re capable of. Yes, we enjoy crafts — but we’re also about travel, sport, community action, fundraising, friendship, and stepping boldly into new experiences.
We’re not just crafts. We’re building confidence, supporting our community, and embracing adventure every step of the way.

We’re proud that Lydney Dial-a-Ride is our official charity for all donations ❤️

Lydney Dial-a-Ride is a fantastic community transport service supporting people across the Forest of Dean who may struggle to access public transport. They provide safe, reliable, door-to-door journeys for shopping, medical appointments, and social activities—helping people stay independent and connected.

Their work makes a real difference by reducing isolation and ensuring that those who need extra support can still get out and about with ease. From accessible minibuses to volunteer drivers, every journey they provide helps improve someone’s quality of life.

We’re honoured to support such a vital service, and every donation we receive will go towards helping them continue their incredible work 🚐

The day wouldn’t go ahead as planned if we didn’t have some of the wonderful assistance from some wonderful organisations that offer their services. 😊

This week, we would to tell you about a few of them as we progress towards the weekend, and today we want to tell you about The Royal British Legion Riders Branch.

The Royal British Legion Riders Branch is a unique community of motorcyclists who share a passion for riding and a commitment to supporting the Armed Forces community.

As part of the Royal British Legion, the Riders Branch raises vital funds through events, ride-outs, and participation in campaigns like the Poppy Appeal.

But it’s about more than just fundraising. The branch brings people together—creating camaraderie, supporting veterans and their families, and proudly taking part in remembrance events across the UK.

Whether it’s riding for a cause, honouring those who served, or simply building a strong and supportive community, the Riders Branch stands united on two wheels. 🏍️🌺
