Professor Chris Booth

On Tuesday (2nd June) we very pleased to welcome Professor Chris Booth a Retired Consultant Urological Surgeon and founder of the CHAPS charity, dedicated to the advocacy for men’s health in general and prostate cancer in particular. He gave an extremely interesting and informative talk on screening for prostate cancer. This was particularly topical as that same morning the government had published a revised prostate screening guidelines on which Chris had strong views!. The talk was very well received and generated many questions and comments by the club members. This in itself shows the progress which has been made with tin dealing with this disease as only a few years ago it is unlikely ‘men’ would have been so open in talking about what they have been through in this regard.
We were also pleased to be able to present Chris with a cheque for £660, being the money raised at our ‘Burns Night Supper’ held in January this year.

Local restaurant supports Rotary fundraiser.

On Saturday 16th May seventy Rotary members and guests gathered at Stanway community hall for a wonderful curry evening. The food was provided by the Rim Jhim Spice restaurant in Stanway and consisted of a variety of curries that were enjoyed by all.

The aim of the event was to raise funds for the Rotary Club of Colchester overseas funds to aid projects internationally. We were able to raise over £1000 through both a raffle and the generosity of Rim Jhim Spice .

Rotary funds new Wellbeing space for students.

The Rotary club of Colchester in collaboration with The Sixth Form College, Colchester and students has funded a new modern wellbeing area in the College campus. It is well proven that this type of environment can contribute to student wellbeing by offering a space to relax and socialise between lessons.
The are consists of sustainable seating made from re-cycled materials, large canopy umbrellas and planters with a variety of plants. It also includes a number of display cabinets which will contain sent art work. The student council have named the area “The Olive Court” which has a Roman connotation reflecting the rich history of the site.
The space was officially opened on Friday 22nd May with College Staff, students and Rotary members in attendance.
