RIP Pebbles 🖤🤍
We’re very sad to share that our beloved Campus Cat, Pebbles, has died after nearly 17 years as part of life at Essex.
He arrived on campus by himself. We took him home. He came back.
In the end, Pebbles chose Essex.
And over the next 17 years, he became part of what it meant to belong here.
He wandered the Squares, slept alongside students in the Library, waited outside The Store, made himself at home in Tony Rich and regularly appeared in places he probably wasn’t supposed to be.
For generations of students, he was a familiar face around campus, a little bit of comfort on a difficult day and one of those things that simply made Essex feel like home.
Last night, after a brief illness, Pebbles sadly passed away.
We know there are thousands of students, staff and alumni with their own Pebbles stories and photos, and we’d love to collect them.
You can share your favourite Pebbles memory with us here:

If you’re on campus, you can also visit his statue over the coming days to leave a flower or message. And, of course, you can still rub his nose for luck.
Thousands of students came and went.
Pebbles stayed.
Goodbye, Pebbles. You’ll always be part of Essex. 🖤🤍
