Women's Institute Girls: The WIGs, Colchester Hello from the Women's Institute Girls, also known as The WIGs. "Like" us to stay up-to-date with our news and activities.

The WIGs (WI Girls) are a growing branch of the Women's Institute based in Colchester, Essex. We're out to celebrate what it means to be a woman in the modern world. With around 80 members from a mixture of ages (everyone welcome, from 18+) and backgrounds, we pride ourselves on being an all-encompassing group of women who are driven by a common interest - a desire to learn new things, discover ne

w interests and share our experiences with like-minded people. It's about being ourselves, while learning and growing from our adventures together. We meet on the first Wednesday of the month at 7.30pm (WIGs o'clock!); in the Tollgate Hall, Stanway, CO3 0RH. Alongside our main meeting we have regular social events and several monthly subgroups (members only) including; Craft Club, Cake Club, Ladies Who Lunch, Walking Group, Knit & Stitch, Let's Listen and Read, Supper Club, Out & About and Sunday Social. Our main meetings cover a wide range of topics. Recent subjects have included; a willow weaving workshop, a talk by a Great British Bake Off contestant and a talk by a forensic scientist to name a few. Membership for 2026 (April 2026-April 2027) is £54. We welcome non-members and visitors to attend one monthly meeting to find out more about us before you commit to membership. We don't make a charge for this meeting but as a registered charity we would welcome donations towards our running costs. Non-members are unable to participate in subgroups or receive the WI Life or Essex News magazines.

Last month, our craft club gathered to make worry dolls. Everyone started the same but look at the huge variety - aren’t they fabulous? Our craft club is a great place to get to know other members, have a chat and a laugh whilst trying to create lovely things 😊😊

Our wonderful Out and About group had a fab evening at the Mercury theatre watching the fantastic 'Radio Caroline the musical'
A tense couple of hours were experienced for our 10 show attendees, prior to the show as the previous night show was cancelled due to the leading man’s sickness.
The last minute stand in was fantastic especially as 24 hours previous he had never seen the script or knowledge of any of the songs that were in the show.
The performance was full of memories and songs many in the group had forgotten such as The Hippy Hippy Shake.
If you are lucky enough to get a ticket they all agree you need to see it.

On Wednesday we held our main meeting. This month we were joined by Joseph from the British Origami Society. He explained the history of origami and shared some of the amazingly intricate pieces he had created. He then patiently guided us through the folds needed to make a butterfly, which all of us managed successfully!

Five lovely ladies went to Charter Hall last night to see 'Whitney Queen of the Night' a tribute. They said "It was probably one of the best tribute acts we have seen".
The headline singer was fantastic and definitely hit Whitney's iconic notes, and the guest singer could easily have stepped into the main role the quality was so good.
All in all a fantastic night and they would definitely go again.
A double thumbs up for this 'Out and About activity.
The Mersey Beatles are up soon, so be sure book up if you fancy joining the ladies on another musical activity.
