April is Stress Awareness Month. Open Road is aware of how much stress is in the daily lives of our service users and their families. Stress Awareness Month is an annual event observed every April since 1992, dedicated to increasing public awareness about the causes, effects, and management of stress. The Stress Management Society, a nonprofit organisation established in 2003, has been championing this initiative for over two decades. Their mission is to help individuals and organisations recognise and reduce stress, fostering happier, healthier, and more resilient communities. Stacey, our Welfare & Volunteer Manager, was invited to an Essex Police briefing with Jess Phillips MP, the Minister for Safeguarding & Violence Against Women & Girls (VAWG), at Colchester Police station recently, to discuss and look at the work Colchester is doing around VAWG. The Minister praised Colchester's efforts, especially the impact of Open Road's SOS Community Buses. Vinnie Geaves from Our Colchester Business Improvement District, one of our strategic partners, is also pictured.

We, at Open Road, were delighted to attend the High Sheriff of Essex's Awards recently. We received £10,435 which is going towards both SOS Buses' volunteers, including uniforms, first aid and self-defence training.
‘The support we have received through the High Sheriff of Essex Awards is incredibly meaningful to us. This funding enables us to strengthen our SOS Bus provision by equipping our volunteers with vital first aid and self-defence training, alongside providing appropriate uniforms and essential equipment to keep both volunteers and those we support safe. Across Essex, our SOS Bus is often a first point of contact for vulnerable individuals in the night-time economy, and this investment will enhance our ability to respond effectively, professionally, and compassionately. It ensures our volunteers feel confident and supported in their roles, ultimately allowing us to reach more people, reduce harm and continue building safer communities.’ – Nicky Best, Welfare and Volunteer Senior.
We are very grateful to for the award.

Sunday 8 March 2026 is International Women’s Day (IWD), and this year’s theme is ‘Give to Gain’, because when women thrive, the whole community benefits. When organisations invest in women, their whole industry becomes stronger, more innovative and more sustainable. Giving is not a subtraction, it’s multiplication. Open Road supports IWD & our women throughout our Essex centres, in Medway & Head Office demonstrated their support for this year's theme.
