🤍SUNNY’S FIRST SURGERY 🤍

A little update on sweet Sunny, she had part one of her surgery today, with her first TECA completed. ❤️‍🩹

She’s understandably feeling rather delicate tonight and has settled down for some much-needed sleep. She’s currently on quite a lot of medication to manage her pain and help soothe those awful allergies.

A huge thank you to her surgeon Carmen from linkswood and everyone involved in her care today — Sunny really is in the best hands. 🙌❤️

And a massive thank you to every single person who donated towards her care.

Today’s treatment alone came to £1,497.29, and this is only the first stage of getting her pain free. She still has her second TECA to come, followed by her dental treatment.

When you donate to one of our dogs, this is where it goes. Today, your support helped give Sunny something she has desperately needed for a long time, years in-fact! — proper treatment and the chance to live without constant pain. 🥹

We’ll admit, we were worried about taking Sunny’s case on. Not only because of the extent of her medical needs, keeping up with financial commitments for her, and because we were told she had nipped someone in her previous home.

But since coming to us, Sunny has shown us nothing but a sweet little girl who needed someone to understand her, take care of her and get her out of pain.

She really did just need someone to give her that chance. ❤️

And there’s another little win — the change in food seems to be helping her allergies too. She’s no longer chewing herself raw, which is absolutely wonderful to see. 🥹

There’s still a journey ahead, but today was a huge step towards a much more comfortable life.

For tonight, it’s medication, TLC and plenty of sleep.

🐾 READY FOR ADOPTION — SKYE 🐾

Beautiful Skye is officially ready to start looking for her forever home. ❤️

Her foster family have got to know her well, and this is what they have to say about her:

🥰 Extremely cuddly and loving — personal space isn’t really something Skye believes in! If you’re on the sofa, she’ll happily be joining you for cuddles.

❤️ Very friendly with people and has been lovely with everyone she’s met.

🐶 Good with other dogs — she enjoys pottering around the garden and spending time with the resident dogs.

🐕 Skye needs another dog in her new home, as she’s used to and enjoys canine company.

🐾 Walks nicely on the lead, enjoys her outings and loves having a good explore.

🏡 Can be left for around 4–5 hours without any issues.

💤 Crate trained.

🌳 Needs a secure garden.

🐱 Not cat tested.

👧 Children aged 10+ would be best for Skye.

🍽️ She currently eats soft food following extensive dental work, but having fewer teeth certainly hasn’t stopped her from relocating your shoes just as you’re trying to leave the house! 😂

Skye is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, flea treated and wormed and is ready for the next chapter of her life.
She really is an absolutely beautiful little dog with so much love to give. ❤️

A little update on Janice ❤️

Little Janice headed into the vets today for what was meant to be her dental and spay… only for the vets to discover that she has actually already been spayed!

Her trip wasn’t wasted though. While she was under, the vets were able to remove some rotten teeth and also remove a mammary lump they found. The lump has now been sent away for testing, just to make sure there’s nothing sinister going on. 🤞🏼

They also X-rayed her knee. The X-rays suggest that Janice has likely had an issue with it for quite some time, but thankfully her mobility is actually really good. After reviewing everything, the vets feel the best thing for her at the moment is to leave the leg alone rather than put her through unnecessary surgery.

So, quite a lot for one little dog today! 🥺

For now, Janice is feeling very drowsy and tender and is tucked up sleeping it all off. ❤️‍🩹

Another step forward for our little lady. Now we wait for those results and hope they bring good news. 🤞🏼🐾

🌈 Sleep tight, little Nev 🌈

Today is an incredibly sad day for us at CK9R, as we said goodbye to little Neville.

For those who didn’t know him, Neville came into our care from the stray pound in January. He was incredibly poorly and, during those first few days, we genuinely thought we were going to lose him.

But Nev fought. With the help of our vets he grew stronger and, as his health improved, we got to see the huge personality inside that tiny, fragile body.

Neville was adopted once, but after developing Addison’s disease he returned to our care. He was hospitalised, stabilised and started lifelong treatment.

From then on, Neville stayed with me at home and somewhere along the way he stopped feeling like a rescue dog and simply became part of our family.

My two little girls were a huge part of Neville’s healing journey. He absolutely adored them, and they adored him. They loved him through the good days, the difficult days and all of the chaos that came with being Neville.

And there was plenty of chaos. 😂

Anyone who met Nev will know he could be an absolute menace to society. He was naughty, stubborn, demanding and completely full of character, he made us laugh every single day.

Over the last few months, though, we started watching little Nev decline.

Despite eating huge amounts, his body condition continued to deteriorate due to problems with malabsorption. He became incredibly frail, doubly incontinent and increasingly distressed by what his body was doing to him.

Yesterday was the moment I had to stop looking at the little flashes of the old Neville and look at his life as a whole.

He still had happy moments. He still had that enormous personality. But his body was failing him, and his quality of life had become very poor.

Today we took him to our vets and chose to let him go peacefully rather than ask him to keep fighting simply because we weren’t ready to lose him.

Neville went to sleep in my arms.

I wasn’t prepared for how quickly he went. His little body was so tired and fragile that it was almost as though he was ready, even though we weren’t.

I held him until the end and told him how loved he was.

Coming home without him has hurt more than I can put into words. Our home feels different. There’s a space where our naughty little Nev should be, and I keep expecting to see him appear and cause trouble like he always did.

We spend so much of rescue fighting to save them that sometimes accepting we can’t fix everything is the hardest part.

Neville came to us as a very poorly little stray who nearly didn’t make it through his first few days.

He left this world as our Neville — with a family, two little girls who absolutely adored him, and knowing what it was to be completely and unconditionally loved.

Our home already feels your absence, and we will miss you more than words can say. ❤️

A FINAL WORD ABOUT SUNNY ❤️‍🩹

Firstly, the response to Sunny has been absolutely incredible. The donations to her GoFundMe, shares, messages and offers of support have been overwhelming. We are genuinely so grateful. What an amazing community this little rescue has behind it. 🥰

Unfortunately, alongside that kindness, we have received some extremely rude, accusatory and completely unacceptable comments and messages. We are now seeing people questioning whether CK9R is genuine, whether Sunny’s situation is real and even suggesting that a false story is being used to obtain donations.

Enough. Here are the facts.

Sunny originally came from the National Animal Welfare Trust in Clacton and has suffered with chronic ear disease and severe allergies for years.

We had previously spoken with her owners and discussed changes that could help her, including a controlled diet. Despite her severe allergies, Sunny continued to be fed Tesco own-brand food and we were told alternative diets had not been properly tried.

We were also told Sunny had nipped somebody entering the home, which her owners themselves believed was because of the pain in her ears. Following this, she was no longer being walked or taken for grooming because they no longer trusted her.

Ultimately, the adults responsible for Sunny decided they could no longer continue her care.

Sunny was presented for euthanasia. Not once, but TWICE.

On the second occasion, instead of simply carrying out that request, the veterinary team tried to find another option for her.

Sunny was formally surrendered. The vets took no surrender fee from the family. Only AFTER Sunny had been signed over did CK9R meet her at the veterinary practice and agree to take responsibility for her.

So let’s put one accusation firmly to bed:

CK9R DID NOT TAKE SUNNY AWAY FROM HER FAMILY.

We didn’t request her surrender.

We didn’t request her euthanasia.

We became involved when she needed somewhere to go instead of being put to sleep.

Yes, there is a little girl who clearly adored Sunny, and our hearts absolutely break for her. None of this is that child’s fault. But the love of a child cannot change decisions made by the adults responsible for an animal’s care.

And for everyone demanding that we “give Sunny back”:

No. Sunny was surrendered. She is now in rescue care and she will not be returned.

We will not ask our supporters to raise thousands of pounds, put Sunny through major bilateral TECA surgery and rehabilitation, and then return her to circumstances where the adults responsible for her had already decided they could no longer meet her needs.

We also will NOT demonise Sunny.

This is a dog who has been living with significant chronic pain. We know about the reported nip, and we were told her owners themselves believed her ear pain contributed to it.

Sunny deserves the opportunity to receive treatment, recover and show us who she is without living in pain.

As for suggestions that Sunny’s medical situation or our fundraising is somehow fabricated — Sunny’s veterinary history, her current condition and the treatment she requires are documented by the veterinary professionals involved in her care.

We have absolutely nothing to hide.

But we will not publish confidential veterinary records or private information simply because strangers on social media demand it. Appropriate evidence regarding Sunny’s treatment and fundraising will be shared where necessary.

And please stop attacking the veterinary team.

They are not the villains in this story.

They could have carried out the euthanasia that was requested. Instead, they looked for another option and helped give this dog another chance.

The members of CK9R work tirelessly for these dogs. We deal with situations most people never see and make incredibly difficult decisions.

Those decisions will ALWAYS put the dog’s safety, welfare and medical needs before anybody’s emotions, opinions or wants.

Genuine questions are welcome.

Abuse, harassment and accusations that people are fabricating the suffering of an animal to obtain money are not.

Sunny was facing euthanasia.

Now she’s facing treatment.

A veterinary team gave her another option.

CK9R said YES.

And an incredible community has rallied around her. ❤️

That’s where our attention is staying.

‼️TODAY, SUNNY ALMOST LOST HER LIFE. ‼️

A LITTLE GIRL THINKS HER DOG DIED TODAY 💔

Today, 7-year-old Cockapoo Sunny was taken to the vets to be put to sleep.

Left with her was a little drawing, carefully tucked inside a Play-Doh pot.

It was a picture of a little girl and her dog — both with sad faces. 💔

A final goodbye from a child who believes her dog is now gone.

But Sunny is still here. ❤️‍🩹

Sunny has suffered for far too long with severe chronic ear disease, repeated painful infections, polyps and allergies that desperately need proper treatment and management.

Her ears are now so badly affected that she needs TECA surgery on BOTH ears — major surgery to remove the chronically diseased ear canals and finally relieve the cycle of infection and pain.

Her family loved her, but with her conditions considered pre-existing, they simply couldn’t afford the treatment she now needs. Sunny originally came from rescue and her family understood ongoing support would be available, but sadly that support wasn’t there when they needed it.

Today they believed their only option was to say goodbye.

Instead, Sunny was surrendered into veterinary care and Colchester K9 Rescue have agreed to help Sunny, but we can’t do this alone 🙏 🐾

We collect her on Tuesday and start putting things right. ❤️‍🩹

Her current veterinary estimate is £2,786.05 and we desperately need to raise £3,000 towards her treatment and ongoing medical needs.

For our little rescue, that’s a huge amount for one dog.

But how could we say no 🫣

💔 MEET ALFIE — SAFE AT LAST

Alfie is a young Terrier cross who has now joined us at CK9R.

From the information passed to us, Alfie was found in a d**e in the March area, where he had reportedly been dumped alongside several other dogs.

We have been told the other dogs were found first, but Alfie wasn’t. Around a week later, he was eventually discovered still hiding amongst the overgrowth in the d**e. 💔

Alfie was initially taken in by another rescue and later ended up in kennels after a foster placement was unable to manage his extreme fear and flight behaviour so he ended up in kennels.

And now, he’s with us. ❤️‍🩹

What we can tell you ourselves is that Alfie is absolutely terrified.

This little boy is in survival mode. His instinct right now is simply to escape. He isn’t looking for affection, reassurance or a relationship with people — he just wants to find a way out and get away.

And after everything we’ve been told about his past, we can understand why.

His emotional wellbeing has clearly suffered deeply. So there will be no pressure, no expectations and absolutely no rushing him.

Alfie is now safely in a foster home where his world can finally become smaller, quieter and predictable. Each day will be taken at his pace, giving him the time and space he needs to learn that he no longer has to run.

A huge thank you to everyone who responded to our plea and helped with the transport costs to get Alfie to us. ❤️

For now, we’re asking nothing from him.

🥹 AFTER A REALLY TOUGH FEW DAYS IN RESCUE… WE FINALLY HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS TO SHARE.

After some incredibly difficult and heartbreaking rescue cases over the last few days, we think we all need a little bit of happy. 🤎

Our surprise rescue baby Edward is now 6 weeks old and absolutely thriving!

Affectionately known as the little potato 🥔, Edward is growing beautifully alongside his very proud and VERY protective mum, Jessie.

These two have had one hell of a journey together. From Jessie arriving in rescue and us discovering she was pregnant, to little Edward’s entrance into the world — but look at them now. 🥹

A huge thank you to their wonderful foster for taking such incredible care of them both throughout it all.

And the best news? They’re staying together forever. 🤎

Their foster has offered Jessie and Edward a permanent home together, so little potato gets to grow up right beside his mum.

After the sadness we’ve seen recently, this is exactly the kind of happy ending we needed to share.
