Well, here we are on the eve of another election - and it doesn't get any less nerve wracking!
In the 4 years I've stood as a candidate, this has been the most hotly contested with candidates resorting to desperate measures to secure votes-
Making elaborate claims in leaflets, including:
They've been endorsed by departing Councillors who have never even met them;
They've been 'working hard for Shrub End all year' when they've only been around a short time and only seem to set foot in Shrub End for photo or video opportunities;
Claiming credit for things they have played little (or in some cases no) part in.
Claiming they live the closest to Shrub End! (Does that matter?) Yet don't say where they live and all apart from me have actively hidden their addresses!?
The most shocking thing I've heard is residents saying they've been promised incentives like having repairs done to their homes in return for putting a board up! If you have been approached to do this, you'll unlikely ever get what's promised as it's highly illegal so please just refuse and report it.
It's tough being a candidate without a Councillor in the same ward/division as I don't have access to resources the other candidates do so everything I have achieved has been on my own and from my own time and cost. I don't mind, I genuinely enjoy it but if everyone worked together, we could get so much more done! Sadly that seems a long way off when all some want is to win at any cost - they say Westminster is dog eat dog, but it appears to have nothing on Shrub End this year!
But, please rest assured I've delivered my leaflets, I've met and spoken to many residents and I will not be disturbing you by knocking on doors and harassing you for your vote; who you vote for is entirely your decision and I respect that.
The one thing I ask you to please remember this is a local election, your vote is for the person not the party. The people and parties endorsing candidates are already Councillors so you're not voting for them. You are voting for who you think will make a good Councillor and work the hardest for you for the 2 years until the next election.
So, whilst being honest and quietly getting on with looking out for Shrub End may not ensure I win, it does mean whatever happens I can hold my head high and I think that's important ๐
A huge thank you to everyone who continues to support me and good luck to my amazing colleagues.
Best wishes
Angela
