It’s been show time!...
For those who don’t know, show season is very much a family affair. We exhibit together as the Monach Dairy Goat Herd, bringing our family farm teams together for several of the country’s largest agricultural shows. The Monach herd represents generations of careful breeding, herd management and dedication, and we’re incredibly proud to continue that legacy.
With the red alert heat warning affecting Essex, we made the difficult decision to cancel all Wellies-On sessions this week. The welfare of both people and animals always has to come first.
To avoid travelling during the hottest part of the day, we loaded the goats and set off late on Monday evening, arriving in Norfolk overnight. Thankfully, conditions at the were around 5°C cooler than at home, with a welcome breeze. The organisers and stewards had excellent measures in place, including fans, wet towels, plenty of shade and even a gazebo in the judging ring to help keep both exhibitors and livestock safe and comfortable.
Back at Wellies-On, Warren took on the huge responsibility of caring for all the animals and keeping the farm running while we were away, with a helping hand from Laura. We’re incredibly grateful to them both, especially Warren, whose hard work behind the scenes made it possible for us to focus on representing the Monach herd.
It proved to be a successful few days. The Monach herd was awarded three more Breed Champion Certificates, along with several class wins. One of the highlights was seeing Marli’s homebred kid, out of Ivy, crowned Best Kid in Show. Ivy herself was also awarded a Reserve Certificate of Merit in the show class, making it a very special result.
Crinkle also performed brilliantly in the milking competition, recording the third highest milk weights across the competition. We’re now keeping everything crossed while we wait for the milk sample results, which will determine the final competition placings.
Thank you to everyone who played a part, both at home and at the show. Successes like these are always a team effort, and we’re incredibly thankful to everyone who helped make the week possible 💚🐐💚
