For over a decade, UK-based company Haddenhamhealthcare have supported Lepra’s work in India and Bangladesh.

Last year, Haddenham Healthcare helped to fund a new referral centre in Assam, India. The Comprehensive Disability Referral Centre in the Tinsukia Tea Garden helps to ensure tea garden workers receive timely treatment and care, as well as vital social and emotional support.

Since opening, the centre has helped to identify, diagnose and treat over 50 new cases of leprosy and LF (including three children and 39 complex cases), 280 pairs of specialist footwear have been provided, nearly 60 training events have been held and over 10,000 people have been screened.

We'd like to say a special thank you to the team at Haddenham Healthcare, whose generosity and kindness have helped to fund this vital project.

Ramachandra has lived with lymphatic filariasis (LF) for nearly 30 years. He first noticed swelling in his legs and over time he experienced frequent acute attacks of pain and fever which gradually made everyday tasks more difficult. During painful episodes, Ramachandra’s mobility was so badly affected that it impacted his work.

For Men's Health Week 2026, we meet Sarwan who kept his leprosy symptoms hidden for over a decade fearing rejection and social exclusion from his family and community.

Although leprosy is curable, profound prejudice surrounds the disease and discrimination persists. These factors drive social isolation, restrict access to public services, and severely impact the overall wellbeing of people affected.

India accounts for about 60% of all new leprosy cases globally, with over 100,000 new cases detected annually. In total, an estimated two million people in India are living with long-term disabilities and health issues resulting from the disease.
