Callout number: 84

Date: 11/10/2026

Time: 12:10

Weather: Clear

Location: Darling How, Whinlatter

Type of callout: Full team call-out

Team members involved: 13

Duration: 1.5 hours

Description:

The first of three callouts for the Team on Sunday. We were called out to a mountain biker who had sustained injuries to their left arm and chest.

Great North Air Ambulance were quickly on scene as they were already in the area and had managed to land very close by. On our arrival to scene, the casualty's medical care was well underway. Oxygen and strong pain relief were being administered, and the left arm was splinted.

We helped move the casualty into our assembled stretcher. Given the steep terrain, a rope system had been set up to ensure a safe haul up to the forestry track. Once on the track, it was just a short carry to the awaiting helicopter. The mountain biker was then flown to Newcastle for further treatment.

The Team wishes the casualty a speedy recovery.

Training

Date: 20/09/2026

Weather: Sunny spells

Location: Tongue beck

Team members involved: 25

Duration: 4 hrs

Description:

Day 2 of our annual weekend team training saw the Team locating and treating a 'casualty' next to Tongue Beck in the Ennerdale Valley. The 'casualty', being played by one of our team members, had fallen and sustained injuries to the right side of their chest and was subsequently struggling to breathe.

These scenarios are played out in real time, with those organising the training providing challenges we could encounter. In this instance, team members dealing with the casualty had requested helicopter evacuation due to chest injuries. As can happen on a real callout, the helicopter was unable to attend for some time, so the walker now needed to be packaged and carefully stretchered down the hill.

The Team utilised the stretcher's different modes - sledging over grassy areas, a wheel on more even track, and carrying for sections unsuitable for either sledging or wheeling.

The practice ended with a quick debrief at YHA Black Sail with feedback from our mock casualty. The Team then headed back to base to ensure all bags and vehicles were packed and ready to go.

Our ability to function this weekend was in no small part thanks to Ellen and Walter from Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre and we would love to extend our heartfelt thanks to them for looking after us!

Training

Date: 19/09/2026

Weather: Cloudy, windy

Location: Pillar Rock

Team members involved: 30

Duration: 7.5hrs

Description:

At our annual team training, held at Low Gillerthwaite Field Centre, the Team spent Saturday on Pillar Rock. With plenty of rock climbs and an abseil from the summit, this is an area where we have been and will be required to treat and extract casualties in very difficult ground.

The Team practised lowering a casualty out of what is known as Jordan Gap. The rope system was rigged using a high line, which allowed us to bring the casualty and the rescuer away from the steep face and prevent them from swinging into the gully. This involves two stations - one at the top in charge of lowering the casualty, and one at the bottom that controls the high line. We ran the scenario through twice so that team members could get hands-on at each station.

Location: High Stile

Type of callout: Limited team call-out

Team members involved: 9

The Team made their way to Gatesgarth before heading up the hill. A rope system was rigged and a team member was lowered down to the walkers. The pair were then lowered to safer ground.
