Calder District Scout Council

Calder District Scout Council Calder District Scout Council is based in the central North Lanarkshire area providing fun, safe, adventurous activities to over 400 young people.

Adventure and fun are two of the words Scouting brings to the forefront of people's minds. Through these ideals, young people get to have their first taste of responsibility and take risks in a safe, controlled environment. Through our Scout groups, we give these young people experiences that they will remember for their whole lives. Scouting provides over 200 activities from abseiling to zorbing.

Ever rolled down a hill in a huge ball? There are very few activities you cannot try and we strive to provide every opportunity for all young people involved. But Scouting isn't just about activities for their own sake. We encourage our young people to embrace the challenge while having fun doing so! All of this is made possible through our dedicated team of voluntary adult leaders. With their award winning training, and many avenues of support we strive to create many great opportunities our young people will cherish and remember for many years to come, if not their whole lives. It's what makes us different, and what makes us the leading co-educational voluntary youth movement in the country! Come join us if you feel up to the challenge!

My name is Maureen, and I’m proud and, if I’m honest, a little nervous to take on the role of Calder District Lead Volunteer.

I believe Scouting gives young people opportunities, adventure, and valuable life skills, helping them build confidence, resilience, friendships, and memories. None of this would be possible without our dedicated leaders and volunteers, whose time, energy, and enthusiasm make Scouting happen across the district.

I would also like to thank Neil for his hard work, dedication, and commitment to Calder District over the past eight years. His leadership and support have made a real difference to so many volunteers and young people, including myself.

My Scouting journey began with a Lithuanian Scout group in the 1980s, and I am currently Akela at 1st Bellshill and Mossend.

As I begin this new role, I look forward to supporting our leaders and volunteers as we continue to provide the best possible experiences and opportunities for young people across Calder District.

Well done, bravo.

Last weekend, scouts across the District came together for the District Competition Camp, at Nineacres in Crook of Devon.
The sun was shining (mostly), the scouts worked really hard and very well together, too, and the leaders had a great weekend.

The winning patrol was from 2nd Coatbridge.
Well done to the winners. 🎉

I'd like to introduce Eli, our new District Youth Lead.
Eli will work alongside the District Leadership Team to further young people's direct influence in decision-making.

Some more information about Eli:

“I started my Scouting journey as a Beaver and Cub in 9th Coatbridge before transferring to 9th Airdrie for Scouts and Explorers. I was a Young Leader in Cubs & Scouts, before becoming a Team Leader in Scouts and a team member in Squirrels and Explorers.

I have had many amazing opportunities as part of Scouts. I was lucky enough to be selected to represent Scotland at Roverway 2024 in Norway. I travelled to The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium in 2025 to complete my Explorer Belt. I will also take part in WSJ26 in Poland as part of IST.

Through Scouts I have completed my Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards all of which have been instrumental in shaping my career and life goals.

Scouting has given me amazing friendships with people all over the UK, as well as unforgettable experiences both locally and internationally. I am delighted to have a role that allows me to continue this on to other young people.”

It is with great sadness that I let you know of the passing of Kathleen Campbell, who died on hogmanay.
Kathleen was a leader at 5th Airdrie for many years and, along with her husband Mike, had been heavily involved in Monklands Gang Show.

Looking forward to the year ahead.
